July 22, 2025 Post #7 AICosts.ai Update: First Paying Customers & Growth Strategy

Quick recap

AICosts.ai is the unified dashboard I built to track AI spending across 50+ platforms after getting tired of juggling multiple billing portals and surprise charges from forgotten automations. We recently tried our first organic launch on Product Hunt a few days ago as well so thank you to everyone who upvoted and/or commented!

Milestone Update: First Paying Subscribers!

Just hit two major milestones this week:

  • First $19.99/month Pro subscriber - A freelance developer who was manually tracking costs across 8 different AI services in a Google Sheet (sound familiar?)

  • First $49.99/month Business subscriber - A small agency that got burned by a $600 surprise OpenAI bill last month and needed team-wide visibility

Both found us through word-of-mouth and Product Hunt, which validates that this pain point is REAL for people actually building with AI tools daily.

What's Working vs. What's Not

The good: Organic discovery is happening. People who find the tool immediately get it.

The challenge: Reaching the right audience at scale. Most AI cost management conversations happen in scattered communities, and traditional marketing feels too broad for this niche.

Testing New Growth Channels

Based on where our current users came from, I'm experimenting with:

LinkedIn Strategy:

  • Sales Navigator targeting: CTOs, Engineering Managers, and Founders at 10-500 person companies using AI tools

  • LinkedIn Groups: Joining AI/ML communities, startup founder groups, and developer cost optimization discussions

  • Cold DMs: Personalized outreach to people posting about AI tool usage/costs (not spammy sales pitches)

Facebook Groups:

  • SaaS founder communities

  • Indie hacker groups focused on AI projects

  • Developer communities discussing tool costs

B2B Communities I'm Testing/Considering:

  • r/MachineLearning - Engineers often discuss infrastructure costs

  • Dev.to - Writing about AI cost optimization strategies

  • Y Combinator Work at a Startup - Startups burning cash on AI experiments

  • Slack communities like Startup School, AI/ML communities

  • Discord servers for AI builders and indie developers

Questions for the Community:

  1. Where do you typically discuss AI tool costs/budgets? Looking for communities I might have missed.

  2. What would make you actually pay for cost tracking? The free version shows basic spending, but wondering what premium features drive conversions.

  3. Anyone else finding success with niche B2B community marketing? This feels like the right approach but curious about others' experiences.

The plan is to stay close to these communities, provide genuine value (not just promote), and let the product speak for itself when people have the problem we solve.

P.S. - Building in public has been surprisingly helpful. The transparency around our journey seems to resonate with other founders dealing with similar challenges. Will keep sharing updates as we scale!

What channels have worked best for you when targeting very specific B2B niches like this?

May 15, 2025 Post #6: Applied Agents + Magic Patterns + simple API platform brainstorming

Hey IH community 👋 another quick one today!

Previously, I made a post about building out agents to automate some of aicosts.ai operations outside of engineering (SEO content and/or overall Marketing operations).

Made some progress on that but also decided to just use adinsights.ai (a service I built to do just that haha but need to add some functionality for image/video generation which I could just append to the services the tool provides as well).

Also, we added Magic Patterns to the list of supported platforms and made a blog post about it here! Feel free to reach out if there’s any platforms we’re missing on the list that you enjoy using and/or integrated into your business’ daily and/or weekly operations!

Lastly, I was brainstorming building out a simple API platform for pro users to be able to upload usage data via an endpoint instead of uploading on the site itself.

May 8, 2025 Post #4: More platforms + agents in practice (applied)

Hey IH community 👋 quick one today!

Still migrating everything over to the new AICosts.ai domain (aicosts.ai), and setting up the current domain to be backwards compatible, but was able to quickly append some more platforms after some research.

Additionally, I’m thinking of building out agents to automate some of AIBillingDashboard.com operations outside of engineering (SEO content, Video Content, etc.)

Honestly, I think that not only will it help with learning more about the supported platforms listed on our site (such as Manus AI, Gumloop, AutoShorts, etc for research and marketing automation) but with learning about new tools in the space as well.

Feel free to reach out if there’s any platforms we’re missing on the list that you enjoy using and/or integrated into your business’ daily and/or weekly operations!

May 7, 2025 Post #3: PagerDuty + Outreach + DNS updates + more

Hey IH community!

Some quick updates or what's been shipped/worked on recently

  1. I got PagerDuty set up with HowFast for alerting (technically oncall 24/7 so needed to automate this so I can get an email, text message, and call for when/if the system is down).

  2. Small updates to transactional email templates

  3. Interacting with some helpful people across a few communities I reached (including IH) and got some feedback some users from there (even some feedback on potential solutions to explore specific to their community)

  4. Interacting with some content creators within the space for potential collaborations away from basic/standard upfront monetary partnerships

  5. New domain name purchased (aicosts.ai) and new logo! Working on migrating everything over (got some DNS settings and other things set up both more work needs to get done as always)

The goal is the same: Ship, get feedback, iterate (which may include pivoting entirely)

May 5, 2025 Post #2: What I shipped today: Usage Management View

Hey all, super excited to share what I shipped today for AIBillingDashboard - my AI spending analytics tool for tracking, analyzing, and optimizing your spending across all AI services — from LLMs like Claude, GPT, and Gemini to AI workflow tools like Make, Zapier, and n8n, plus specialized AI services like Tavily, Pinecone, and RunwayML — all in one unified dashboard.

So I pushed the complete Usage Management module to production! Finally got all four key components working together nicely:

  • UsageManagement - Main component that ties everything together with filtering, searching, and that sweet pagination

  • UsageDataForm - Clean form for adding/editing usage data with dynamic fields

  • UsageDataList - Interactive list view with sorting that actually works now

  • UsageFilterBar - Date-range filtering with MUI DatePickers (upgraded from react-datepicker)

The biggest win was switching to Material UI's DatePicker - much cleaner UI and better mobile experience. Had to wrestle with dayjs formatting for a bit (those timezone issues were killing me 😅), but it's all smooth now.

Added support for all platforms we're tracking and got it working end to end.

Demo up on landing page!

Also, I updated the landing page's demo walkthrough video showing how easy it is to track your spending across OpenAI, Claude, Gemini, and other platforms all in one place.

What's been your experience tracking AI platform costs? Are you just winging it with spreadsheets or is there a better way I'm missing?

Hey IH 👋

Companies are hemorrhaging money on inefficient AI usage without even realizing it.

After watching countless teams, and myself, struggle to manage ballooning AI costs across multiple platforms (juggling between billing portals, losing track of spending, getting surprised by bills), I decided to build.

After ~1 week, I launched (first launch) an MVP for AIBillingDashboard.com.

What I built:

  • A unified dashboard that tracks spending across all major AI providers (OpenAI, Claude, Gemini, Tavily, Pinecone, Make.com, n8n, HuggingFace, etc).

  • Cost comparison tools that show which models give best value for specific use cases

  • Usage analytics that identify cost-saving opportunities across your AI stack

  • Billing cycle tracking and payment alerts to avoid surprise charges

I'm essentially replacing the chaotic spreadsheets and custom scripts that I and teams use to track AI spending with something more simple / straightforward.

Additionally, I built this because while AI adoption is skyrocketing, cost management tools haven't really kept pace, is extremely siloed, and/or create new points of failure such as having usage/analytical requests sent out first to track usage before sending out the prompt for completion.

Would love feedback from the community and/or any AI power users out there!

Anyone else building tools for the AI ecosystem? What cost management challenges are you facing?

Hi Tyler, I help SaaS founders clean up their messaging so it actually drives conversions and attention.

Want a free clarity audit of your homepage or pitch? No pressure, happy to help either way.

Hey, thanks for the offer! What makes you different from me being able to program an Agent to do that for me (using Langgraph for example)? Also, thanks for taking time to comment first here after making an account!

        Great question.

You're right to consider automation. You could build an agent to analyze your messaging.

However, my value goes beyond that. In 7 days, I offer:

        • Human insight from working with many SaaS founders. I understand what truly resonates with customers and investors in the early stages.

        • Strategic guidance to clarify your core value, not just analyze existing text.

        • A specific focus on making you investor-ready, understanding their unique perspective.

        • Speed and efficiency, delivering results in 7 days so you can focus on building.

Think of it as getting a strategic partner with specific expertise, quickly, rather than building a tool yourself.
