AIToolIndex

Searchable AI tool directory for comparing AI software

May 28, 2026 Built a searchable AI tool directory for faster AI stack research

I launched AIToolIndex to make AI tool research less chaotic.

Instead of another long, unsorted AI tools list, it lets builders and teams browse tools by category, use case, pricing model, alternatives, and workflow fit.

The current version includes tool pages, comparison context, alternatives, calculators, and editorial guides. The goal is to help people shortlist the right AI tools faster without digging through generic lists.

Would love feedback from other builders: what AI tool categories or workflows should we cover next?

AI tool directories are structurally doomed right now for a specific reason: the category is being killed by the thing it indexes. People don't browse directories anymore — they ask ChatGPT, Claude, or Perplexity "best AI tool for X" and get a synthesized answer in seconds. The directory's whole value (shortlist faster) is now done better by the LLMs themselves. You built a directory for AI tools at the moment AI made directories obsolete.

And the category was saturated before that shift — There's An AI For That (10K+ tools), Futurepedia, Future Tools, Toolify, dozens more with years of domain authority. Directory economics need massive traffic, traffic needs SEO, and "AI tools" SEO is both owned by incumbents and collapsing into AI Overviews. No traffic path for a new entrant.

"What categories next" assumes the problem is coverage. It isn't — the incumbents have everything. The real question is why anyone uses this instead of asking an LLM.

If you're committed, the only survivable version is hyper-narrow with real editorial depth — "the deepest comparison of AI tools for [one specific profession]" where your judgment beats the LLM's generic synthesis. The horizontal directory is fighting the giants and the chatbots at once.
