Alloy

A database client for web developers

July 3, 2024 Published a product demo

I've been sharing small gifs on Social Media as I've completed new features. But I realised that if you were not following closely you might be missing some context. So I recorded a 5-min walkthrough of the app and shared it on all social media channels. It didn't get a lot of traction but it's nice to have out there since I now have something I can link to when people ask about the product.

    Hi
I could not find the link to Alloy website. Is it public or still in closed development?

Regarding the product demo, it is too long for me. For me, you have created a training video, not really a product demo. I feel this can be easily compressed down to less than a minute with proper cuts and focusing on the core benefits of the product. That is what I personally expect from a product video.

You can repurpose this video and create short tutorial videos where you focus on a particular thing e.g. database search. That will be helpful for people who want to explore Alloy further but ONLY AFTER they have been awed by the product video.

That makes sense! Thanks a lot for the feedback

There isn't a website yet, so for now I link people to this form: https://forms.reform.app/hOaSH7/alloy/2ymthe

June 27, 2024 1st early access signup

So far I've been building in public by sharing small snippets of features I found interesting. While the numbers are small I get more engagement on these posts than I normally do on other posts. And I've had a couple of people I don't personally know comment on the posts and asking questions. And 1 person signed up for the early access form!

June 25, 2024 Creating an early access form

The MVP has drawn out slightly because of some illness and other personal stuff. But it's about to be done and for the next step I need some kind of place to send people who might be interested. For now I've created an early access form and I might record a little video walking through the MVP and put it on the website.

May 31, 2024 Breaking ground on the MVP

I've decided that I need to pursue this idea for at least a little bit. I've defined a very limited scope:

  • Connect to databases
  • Navigate through databases with URL like interactions
  • Basic interactions like adding, updating and deleting rows. That means no tools to configure the structure of the database like adding new tables
  • Searching tables

Additionally I've decided on the following to not get bogged down

  • Only support sqlite
  • Only support MacOS

I've only given myself a couple of weeks to intentionally keep the scope limited
