July 5, 2026 Building an AI tutor based on cognitive science

I spent the last few months building Aquila AI, an AI tutor designed to help people actually learn instead of just getting answers.

Most AI chatbots are great at answering questions, but they're not great teachers. They'll often solve the problem for you before you've had a chance to think.

I wanted to build something different.

Aquila AI uses learning techniques inspired by cognitive science, including:

  • Active recall

  • Spaced repetition

  • Personalized explanations

  • Step-by-step guidance

  • Adaptive practice based on what you're struggling with

The goal isn't to make homework easier—it's to help students understand concepts deeply and remember them long after the exam.

It's still an early version, and I'm looking for honest feedback from founders, students, educators, and anyone interested in AI for education.

I'd especially love feedback on:

  • Is the value proposition clear?

  • What would make you try it?

  • What's the biggest feature you think is missing?

You can check it out here: v

Thanks in advance for any feedback—I'm happy to answer questions and share what I've learned while building it.
