June 7, 2020 I sold the project

There is a time to come with an idea, a time to build, a time to market and a time to move on. I passed all these by now. And I'm happy about it.

In the last months it became clearer and clearer that I'm not a great marketing man. That's okay, I just didn't know it back then. Now that I sold the project, this will be the main thing I learned: I don't need to know everything, I only need to know what I don't.

I sold it through Indiemaker.co for 2k EUR (code plus brand names plus domains). Not big cash obviously, the expierence I got from it made it worth it.
I'm not that satisfied about the marketplace itself (the UX isn't great, not that I know how to fix it).

April 17, 2020 Shuting down, sort of

Today I have some special news. Arnold Analytics is shutting down, sort of. Let me explain. The Arnold Analytics that you used to know will be disappearing in October of this year. With a reason.

As I wanted to add new features, the branding just didn't felt right any more. Indiemetrics offers more flexibility in terms of how you send data than Arnold Analytics did.

You want server side tracking? You can. You want event tracking? You can. You have a website written in Angular and want to add pageview tracking? You can.

All of these weren't possible with the old service or code base.
A misjudgement, maybe. A good learning opportunity, absolutely.

As the rebranding is still ungoing, I can't reveal you all, but I will keep you posted.

March 31, 2020 Carbon offsetting etc.

In the past week, I made added some minor changes and kickstarted a partnership with a nature restoration NGO.

First the minor changes. I added, mostly as a gimmick, the possibility to let the browser read the data out loud. I works rather great.

Next I am tweaking the homepage a bit. For now I only changed a small piece of text and I added a currency convert from EUR to USD to make things easier for non-EU users.

And finanly the biggest achievement: I started working with a nature restoration NGO, BOS+, to offer the possibility to offset the carbon emissions of your site or sites.

Hi @argovaerts I am doing a feasibility investigation for carbon offset tool for e-commerce stores. Could I ask you questions about your experience that you mentioned above?

March 23, 2020 Experimenting with referral marketing

Another day in quarantine, another update.

Today I added a refer a friend module. Mostly because I don't really like to spend my money on ads and to reward users who bring on others.

The basic idea: If 10 referred people become paid customers, the referrer gets a 100 EUR gift card to use on Amazon or Bol.com (e-commerce player active in Belgium and the Netherlands).

I will keep you posted on the results.

March 22, 2020 Updated the homepage plus some minor tweaks

I'm following a free marketing course (thanks COVID-19). To bring things in practice I updated the homepage. It now looks more landing page like. Mostly I deleted parts and added more whitespace. I am looking forward to get some feedback on the new design. In the meantime I am adding some minor tweaks to the application itself.

March 4, 2020 Switching to freemium

I have been working on a new business model for a few weeks now. So today I am making public that Arnold Analytics switched into a freemium model with three tiers (free, premium and unlimited).
In order to handle the extra administration (mainly VAT) I am using Paddle now instead of doing everything myself.

February 9, 2020 First major update

This week, Arnold Analytics got its first major update. Some unwanted and distracting features disappeared, like a UX survey, some where added, like a check on the SSL certificate duration.

Also the setup proces changed, more specificly the hostname validation.

So a huge win for me! 💪

November 19, 2019 Joining Indie Hackers

Working as a solo founder can be lonely, so here I am: some selfish self-promotion towards like minded people.

Arnold Analytics is a website analytics SaaS for organizations that put simplicity and insights first. Our customers use Arnold Analytics for three things:

  1. To know where visitors come from and what they are interested in;
  2. To gauge the carbon footprint of their websites;
  3. To see these insights in one handy overview.

    Welcome aboard!

I'm curious about number 2, how is that done?

    1. 1

On regular times, the system calculates the CO2 equivalent emitted by the website, both by the server infrastructure and by data transportation. As a work in progress I want to fine tune the calculation to incorporate the local emissions caused by the visitors themselves. For now, this is estimated on the global average.

About

I wanted to make a tool, initialy for myself, to get basic insights in my websites. Being a green politics advocate, I incorporated a tool to monitor the carbon footprint of my websites.
