March 23, 2023 V2 of Article summarizer is live

It has been a month now since the first release of the extension.

Our expenses on OpenAi are rising and we decided to limit the free version to 15 free (tokens) summarisations to start bootstrapping the project. Monetize it.

How did we do that?

  1. We added a counter that lets users know how many free tokens they have
  2. We created a product on Gumroad: https://shapelabs.gumroad.com/l/summarizer-tokens
  3. After the user spends free tokens, she/he can buy 100 tokens for 2€.

What do you think about the move? To soon?

Did you see the Opera browser has launched with chatgpt baked into the sidebar. Prompts are 1-click including 'Shorten'. Shorten = Summarize. All formatting issues sorted etc

    ChatGPT baked into OPERA browser

Wow thanks, this looks amazing. We will consider adding this, I bet Chrome users would love to see this.

I am a chatgpt plus subscriber, and love it. Less cut and paste. I wondered if it was using the same AI model as chatgpt plus as could not see that on website.

Currently we are using davinci, but new version will have two different models, since davinci can be slow in some cases.

February 24, 2023 How & Why

It took us less than 7 hours to fully develop a low code AI-powered Google Chrome extension that summarizes any article online.🧵

This is how we did it and why:

WHY?

Anyone who scrolls through masses of articles on a daily basis can probably relate. They can get long, boring, and mislead the key points. Getting an article summary has to be quicker.

Naturally, we turned to Open AI for the answer. AI model named text-DaVinci-003 was able to summarize long and unstructured articles in seconds, even highlighting only the main points of the story. Unlike us, AI finds access & knows how to read closed/paid articles from bigger publishers like NY Times, The Economist, etc., and return an article summary.

If you need an evaluation of the specific article’s content Open AI provides the quickest look into any article online. Chatting with ChatGPT is cool and all, but this could be quicker.

HOW?

But how to get the same article summary in just one click? While ChatGPT struggling at its capacity during our prime work hours we would usually have to wait for the article summary. To make it easier for our workflow we decided to build a Chrome extension to speed things up & as we build in public, to share it with other content creators online.

We built this Chrome extension using a low code approach, using React for the front end, Mui for styling, Open AI, and Lambda for security.

This is our most efficient way to build Open AI Chrome extension yet. We’re enabling you to get access to any online article summary and increase reading efficiency with only one click!

If you are interested in what we made, feel free to take a look and try it out athttps://article-summariser.webflow.io/

To build in public means we can’t wait for your opinions. What do you think? Leave your review in the comments.

super idea. love it. I find it hard to read when sentences flow one after to the other, and no white space (hard break). And prefer plain text font like in Textedit.

TechScape: Will Meta’s massive leak democratise AI – and at what cost? | Meta | The Guardian
      Here's a tldr;

This article from The Guardian discusses the potential of AI technology to revolutionize the tech landscape, specifically with the emergence of a new AI technology called "ChatGPT." ChatGPT is a natural language processing tool developed by AI company Meta Leak, which has the potential to automate conversations, allowing users to engage with virtual agents in natural language. The article also explores other implications of the technology, such as its potential to revolutionize customer service, create more personalized experiences, and even create new forms of entertainment. Ultimately, the article argues that ChatGPT presents a crossroads for the tech industry, with the potential to either bring about a new era of innovation or to create a new level of algorithmic control over our lives.

      ChatGPT Plus (was bullet pointed)

      • Meta releases LLaMA, a smaller and more efficient language model than competing models like GPT and LaMDA.
      • LLaMA is "open" for other researchers to use, potentially opening up foundational research in the field of AI.
      • The cost of training an LLM has been a major obstacle to research in the field, which LLaMA's release seeks to address.
      • LLaMA's smaller size means it can run on cheaper systems, and it has a smaller environmental impact.
      • The leak of LLaMA raises questions about the tension between companies that want to control access to their AI models and those that favor open access for research purposes.

Thanks for the feedback. We will fix it! 😎

cool, if double tap grabs sentence - rather than manual highlight beginning and end to then cut and paste into textedit.

Yes double tap or tap for c/p could be a great ux improvement. Thanks 🙏

November 15, 2022 How we got the idea

My coworker was using #ChatGPT on daily basis to get a summary. ChatGPT was able to read all articles from websites like @TheEconomist and @nytimes and return a summary. This helped her evaluate if the article was worth reading and mentioning on our blog.
