A few years ago I filed an insurance claim after fire. The claims adjuster asked a simple question: "What did you actually own, and what was it worth?"
I had nothing. No photos, no receipts, no list. Just a vague memory of "a couch, some electronics, I think a TV." The claim dragged out for weeks longer than it needed to, and I know I left money on the table simply because I couldn't prove what I'd lost.
That experience stuck with me. Most people myself included, until that point have zero documentation of their belongings. We insure our stuff, but we never actually catalog it. It's the kind of thing you only realize matters after it's too late.
So I built AssetClip.
What it does:
Lets you catalog your belongings (photos, purchase info, value) in one place
Uses AI photo recognition to auto-identify items and speed up data entry — snap a photo, and it fills in the details for you
Calculates an "Asset Health Score" a 0–100 rating of how well-documented your stuff actually is, so you can see the gaps before you need the data, not after
Built for both individuals and families (Pro and Family plans)
Where it's at:
I'm a solo founder, handling engineering, design, marketing, and growth myself. The core web app is live, the mobile app is in progress, and I'm about to launch on Product Hunt. Right now I'm deep in the "figure out distribution" phase — testing what resonates on Reddit, refining the AI photo recognition flow, and generally trying to get this in front of people who've had (or are scared of having) the same experience I did.
Why I'm posting here:
Mostly to start being public about the build. I'd love feedback from other indie hackers especially anyone who's tackled the "boring but essential" category of SaaS, or anyone who has their own insurance/documentation horror story. Also happy to answer questions about the AI photo recognition stack (DeepSeek + OpenAI fallback) if that's useful to anyone building something similar.

This is a good example of a “latent pain → post-event regret → preventative system” product category. The interesting part isn’t the cataloging itself, it’s the shift from reactive claims processing to proactive ownership awareness. The Asset Health Score is actually the most compelling element here because it turns a static inventory problem into a continuously visible risk surface, which is usually what drives retention in otherwise “boring but essential” tools.
I need this in my life great idea!
