August 12, 2026 Launched my WordPress plugin on Product Hunt today — solo, bootstrapped

Launched Automotive Inventory Importer Pro on Product Hunt Aug 12.

Some context: I'm a solo founder. The plugin syncs car dealership inventory to WordPress from any DMS feed; the free version has 5,000+ downloads on WordPress.org, and Pro launched in June at $149–$699/yr.

What I've learned so far building in this niche:

  1. Vertical niches are solo-founder territory — funded competitors ignore markets this size.

  2. Distribution ≠ revenue. 5,000 downloads taught me that free users and paying customers are different populations.

  3. Lock-in is the incumbent's business model — which makes "no lock-in" a moat they can't copy without cannibalizing themselves.

Happy to answer anything about WordPress plugin monetization, building from a payment-restricted country, or the automotive niche.

The “free users and paying customers are different populations” point is the interesting one.

What did you actually see after launching Pro that made you conclude they’re different populations, rather than free users simply needing a stronger reason or later moment to upgrade?

My sample is small, so "different populations" is a working hypothesis, not a proven conclusion. Here's what led me to it.

When I did direct outreach to my opt-in free users, the first reply I got was from an auto-parts retailer — not a car dealer at all. Looking closer at the install base, a meaningful share of free users aren't my buyer in any form: developers tinkering, agencies testing on staging sites, adjacent businesses that found the plugin through generic keywords. No upgrade prompt, price point, or nurture sequence converts someone whose business doesn't have the problem Pro solves. That's what I mean by different populations.

Have you seen something similar in your own funnel, or did upgrade timing turn out to be the real lever for you?

That’s useful context. I’ve got a few thoughts on what you’re seeing that are probably better discussed outside the thread.

What’s the best email to reach you on?

About

I created Automotive Inventory Importer to give dealerships control over their inventory pages without costly lock‑ins. By syncing any DMS feed directly into WordPress, businesses save money and own their data.
