November 23, 2019 MVP Ready!!!

I am super excited about this! I finally have brought this up to a level that feels decent enough in order to share with the world!

To be honest, I have been swinging constantly between the states of "this does not feel ready for people to see it" and "enough building/fixing things! you need to get it out sooner than later! ". But finally, it reached a point that all the major pieces have been laid down and I think it will set the proper stage for the awesome indie maker community to give me feedback on the right direction.

So without further ado, I present to you, Awesome Devs. A place for awesome developers to create an online profile that helps them showcase not only their work, but the amazing character that underlies everything.

And I present it to you, not for your applause, but for your harsh and un-restrained feedback. I've come to appreciate immensely the value of good feedback and I am more than certain that all your comments will help drive this idea of mine to a truly awesome one.

So let's hear it people!! Hit meeeee

(PS: In case you are interested for actually building a profile, you can check a more complete one to get a better idea of the possibilities by looking at mine at: https://kyriakos-toumbas.awesomedevs.io/)

The 1st image is so big and no visual hints that there is a scroll which I discovered only shrinking the window horizontally which makes it go away entirely.

"Sign in with your" what's that unaligned icon?.. Can just make is "Sign in"

These icons in the button, looks dated style, don't know what the mic means.. (middle one) "The Interview"??

Door is to close the browser tab?

And c.c. is to pay you for seeing the page? horizontally scaling in pricing is off on the signup button

"Lean more" is just a big blob of text? better just scroll me down to the 2nd block... (the slideshow)

Like there is some very powerful imaging with some less so, like the 1st big image is nice, and convey you talk to developers but says nothing else, the slideshow 1st and 3rd images are nice, the 2nd and 4th less so, the 2nd needs some more exiting thing than a blob of text, the 4th might be ok.. cloud be better if like pointing at one of the samples has a bigger preview or something

"talk about yourself" make something more inspiring like "Tell you story"

    GJ getting a thing out

That's what I am talking about. Straight like an arrow. Thanks @hatkyin. Indeed, quite valid comments. Easy fixes everywhere but I see how they can help out the whole story. Thanks a lot.
I still have some major concerns about the icon navigation versus a more traditional menu. I like the design concept, but if it conveys so many wrong concepts, it might be too problematic for me to use

Icons are not as wide and internationally understand as most people think, it's such a context full thing..

July 1, 2019 An awesome idea?

I thought to my self, "other devs are probably struggling with the same issue..".

I felt that I am awesome at what I do. I wanted people to see that as well. I guess others would want the same for themselves...

What better name to launch a product which has a sole-purpose of showcasing the awesomeness of other fellow software developers than... awesomedevs.io ! Bought the domain on the spot!

I really like the "VS" GIF idea. Although it tool me time to understand which one is yours :)

Thanks and thanks! Love this kind of constructive feedback! Will make it clearer for the visitor

Nice job! Wish you a good luck. I suggest you to create some import tool to build a profile on your site by importing linkedin/github info as a base. It should help to gain initial traction with potential customer.

Thanks! Good points to take in mind. I was thinking on focusing on github for something like this as it's more project based (and I can even try to derive the used tech underneath) but LinkedIn my have some interesting pieces of the puzzle which would make sense to autopopulate...

I actually own a domain that suits this idea very well.

    alltime.dev

Cool idea! I'm a bit unsure about the pricing though, given a plethora och other similar platforms where devs can shine. I'd also advise you to take a look at your performance, the examples were rather slow to load for me and I've got a very fast internet connection

That's a nice domain...I might ask for a buyout if everything works out well. heh. Thanks for the feedback. I am also unsure about the pricing, so I've put a price there to get some reactions. Seems it's working :D. I'll need to study further relevant sites to see what the competition is mostly doing.

Do you have any other platforms in mind that are doing a similar thing like i am? Would appreciate some links if you find the time!

Concerning the speed, you are absolutely right. The perils of working with frontend frameworks. But fear not, super fast server-side rendering is on my TODO list!

      Again, thanks for the feedback!

Hey, super sorry for the late reply!

I remember seeing some nice online business card websites, which kind of is what your are going. Although yours is definitely a bit more than that :)

I'm happily awaiting your offer haha

Awesome idea! I have the impression that you rather compete with github than linkedin. But I can see the value, because your site is really just about a profile and showcases for developers and their experience/code.

I would improve on the landing page design for better converison rates. People will use your site to represent themselves, so I think it is important that it looks very appealing.

    Best wishes

Wow, didn't expect a reply on these milestones. I still hadn't convinced my self to share this with the world. Such a nice surprise!

Thanks a lot for the feedback. Indeed, i hadn't thought about github in that manner. I guess if you are a strong open-source contributor, your github profile starts painting a nice picture. Being a client-oriented developer for the past 10 years all my source code as proprietary.

Thanks for the landing page note. Indeed, design should be a strong point of this, and being a fullstack/backend dev myself im not the best at it. I need to get a designer on it sometime soon. Very soon. I am happy though that i managed to convey what it is about correctly! :D

      Cheers again!!

        Cheers mate!

June 2019 Came up with the main concept!

After lot's of thinking and tinkering, I realized that I could showcase things I learned, by explaining the various challenges I had to overcome when working on various projects. Each challenge handled could showcase my ability to pinpoint project pain points, and the way I solved it could showcase my problem solving skills.
Putting these in a time scale, could also help convey the progression of experience over the years. So I would try and build a portfolio/profile page around this concept!

June 5, 2019 Not an easy fix

I started with the traditional concept of creating a list of projects in a traditional grid concept.
But it didn't seem to cut it. How did all these projects helped me become a better developer? What did I learn? How did I learn it? How do I convey to others the reasons I feel so knowledgeable?

So I decided I needed to find a way to build a portfolio that would highlight all these:

  • The knowledge I acquired over the years (not always a tangible thing)
  • The variety of technologies I had played with
  • The variety of issues I had to solve (which made me a better software engineer)
  • They way I handle problems

Let's get cracking

June 1, 2019 Problem made it's appearance

I realized that my CV and LinkedIn account couldn't properly paint the level of expertise I believed my self to have. Having worked in a single company for over 5 years as a founder, it was hard to enhance my professional profile by using Work Experience in the way that networks like LinkedIn propose. I only had one job, in one position, for so long.

But I have worked on sooo many project, using soo many tools, solving sooo different problems, and I couldn't showcase that anywhere!

I decided I needed a portfolio page, that would manage properly capture all that...
