Hey everyone 👋

I’ve been working on an OCR API focused on extracting data from bank statements and invoices, and I wanted to share the story behind it.

The idea came from a simple observation — a lot of financial workflows still rely on manual data entry. Whether it’s onboarding, accounting, or analysis, someone usually ends up copying data from PDFs into systems.

I initially tried solving this with rule-based parsing. It worked for a few cases, but quickly became hard to maintain. Every new document format meant more fixes and edge cases.

That’s when I started exploring OCR-based solutions.

What I’ve learned so far:

• Document formats vary more than expected

• Extracting text is easy, structuring it is the real challenge

• Edge cases take more time than core development

• Keeping the API simple is more important than adding features

The goal is to make it easier for developers to extract structured data like transactions and account details without building everything from scratch.

Still early, but it’s been a great learning experience.
