BadgeFace
Display badges beside your user avatar in facebook groups
Badgeface is an 'additional social layer on top of Facebook'.
Actually it's a plugin that allows users to display images to other Badgeface users, that are associative to various attributes the users want others to know about themselves. But I was told to use big words, so it's a social layer that farts unicorns.
Am I going it right?
It's been a month, and I took a pause.
What have I already done?
Pretty much a working product, POC, Beta or whatever - it's out there, yet unknown and unused, and it's ok.
I have invested only my free (i.e. valuable and expensive) time, which is an acceptable sacrifice, and now I have something I can check for validity and market - two things I don't really know much about.
So while 'pausing', I'm actually learning the non-tech roles of startuping and trying to validate.
That's also how I discovered this community.
What's next? Maybe I'll figure out after reading some more posts :)

π Heyo! Sounds like a good stopping point for building and starting to get clear about WHO is your product for. So...who are you creating for?

Anyone who's active in Facebook groups.
I guess 'casual users'.
Targeting groups is due to technical reasons, but I can actually make it work in the main feed as well.
But as you said, I need to figure out who I'm targeting first.

So adding an 'additional social layer' on top of facebook is not an easy task.
When I built BadgeFace, my constraints were not business related, but completely technological - I wanted to inject code to the user's client, while browsing facebook groups - Zuck is not going to like this!
So how do I do it?
External sites - not possible.
App using API - kinda, but will have tons of limits and can be easily blocked, so no.
Browser Extensions - YES! ...but limited to desktop, mobile (iOS - will probably work on safari, Android - works only on some niche browsers nobody uses).
So I asked around a bit and checked statistics.
Most users use both Mobile and Desktop, with desktop is being used, at some (significant) extent, by 50% of users.
Not bad considering facebook has 1.75bn users.
So l've decided to give it a shot.

The story of badgeface begins in a facebook group where members publish funny memes around some theme.
That group's purpose is not finding a date or a hookup, but many members are messaging members of the opposite sex anyway.
Too damn many of them, actually, until someone published a meme using Peter Griffin's 'Why aren't we funding this?' template, suggesting each member should have a badge on the side of their profile picture, indicating they are available or taken.
And I thought to myself, why not?
