Baserow
Open source online database
Version 0.6.0 of Baserow has just been released with the anticipated file field. It's now possible to upload images, documents and other files directly from your computer or via a URL to the cell of a file field. You can simply drag and drop the files into the cell or use the file upload modal to choose which files you want to upload. We have also introduced an enlarged file view if you want to take a more detailed look. This release also contains bug fixes and other changes.

About Baserow
Baserow is an open source online database tool and Airtable alternative. It's released under the MIT license. Feel free to checkout the repository at https://gitlab.com/bramw/baserow or try out the tool at https://baserow.io.
- MIT License
- Unlimited rows
- Uses PostgreSQL, Django and Nuxt
- Can be self hosted
- Supports plugins
- And lots of other features...
Just released Baserow version 0.5.0 with features to import existing data and the ability to publicly expose your data via a REST API. When creating a new table you can now import existing CSV files or copy over spreadsheet data. It is also possible to publicly expose your table data via a REST API. You can create access tokens and have group, database and table level permissions. You can for example only give a token read access to a certain table. This makes it easy to integrate with your existing application or website. There are request examples in cURL, HTTP, JavaScript and Python in the API documentation generated at https://baserow.io/api/docs.

Wow, good job! Baserow looks really promising!
I noticed that the API makes use of field IDs instead of names. It's good because it doesn't break when you change a column label. However, it's quite unreadable to use field IDs like
field_14126,field_14127,field_14128, and so on... Will it be possible to customize field IDs too? I'd prefer to use meaningful names, for example,first_name,last_name, etc.-

Thanks Lukasz! I agree that it is unreadable in some situations, but the documentation does offer a few tables where you can see which id belongs to which field. I didn't want to use column labels because your API might break when you change it and because of possible label duplicates. I have created an issue to resolve this, but I need to some more research on this when I will work on it. https://gitlab.com/bramw/baserow/-/issues/185

This looks fantastic. I started using Airtable a month ago and am loving the UI. The only problem is that you can't white label it or use a custom domain and have members sign up as if it was your product.
I'm going to have to launch my MVP product and give the same link and password to all my customers which worries me a bit since there's no way to prevent customers from sharing the password with others.
Assuming my mini launch goes well I will be looking for a solution like this long-term so I am in control of who has access to the product and can run it like a proper membership site where everyone has their own login.
Will be following along with your progress!

Thanks! I planned to finish these features in October, but I was delayed a little bit. The roadmap has important deadlines for me so you can expect I will make them! Before the end of November you can expect Image, file and option field types.

Baserow, the open source Airtable alternative, has just reached 100+ stars on GitLab. The repository can be found on https://gitlab.com/bramw/baserow and more information about the tool can be found on the website https://baserow.io. It has been released under the MIT license, supports plugins, unlimited rows and can be self hosted.

I have just released Baserow version 0.3.0 which contains the most requested link to table feature. This allows you to create a field that you can link to the row of another table. This release also contains some small bug fixes and minor changes. You can read more about it in the August release blog post at https://baserow.io/blog/august-release-of-baserow.
Which features do you want next?
I have an existing roadmap at baserow.io, but is this in line with the features that you need? Do you think some features should get more priority over others or is your feature missing from the roadmap? I am collecting information about which feature to build next via our survey. Let me know which features you need via https://bram176883.typeform.com/to/xBkcCnZP.

The code of Baserow has been released publicly under the MIT license. It has always been the plan for Baserow to be commercial open source software. After writing lots of documentation the past few weeks, the code has finally been made public.
Official repository: https://gitlab.com/bramw/baserow
Release blog post: https://baserow.io/blog/open-source-release-of-baserow
Developer documentation: https://baserow.io/docs/index
API documentation: https://api.baserow.io/api/redoc/
Baserow is an open source online database tool and Airtable competitor. The software is still in an early alpha phase, but everyone can try it out now. You can use docker-compose to quickly spin up a demo or you can try the SaaS version at https://baserow.io.

Hello,
Amazing work, I was looking for an open-source AirTable alternative for a long time and didn't find anything like it. This week I started developing one by myself and accidentally found this project :D
I ran the demo on my machine and works fine. However it still feels very alpha, for example there are 5 only data types supported at this point.
Are you planning on building a community? I would like to contribute to this project.

Baserow is still in a very early phase, so I can understand that is feels like an alpha version for you. Right now I am working on the feature where you can link a field's value to the row of another table. There is definitely going to be a community. If you like to contribute maybe you can let me know on which kind of things you would like to work and with which tools, framework, programming languages etc you have experience in.

I really like the website style and concept, it's nice.
I use Airtable and one of the issues I have with it right now for my use case is that it's not suited to having browser clients using the API directly. I think there is a separate product, Flairtable, which addresses some of this.
I could consider switching if the API was better than Airtable, especially in that respect.
I also don't pay for it right now so it wouldn't be high value if I did switch!
Good luck!

Congrats mate. If you don't mind, curious to learn
- Where do you run baserow itself?
- What's the encryption process for data stored in Postgres?
- Any other advice wrt architecture that you would like to give (for people who are building SaaS products)
Thanks.

Thanks!
- The infrastructure of Baserow runs at Digital Ocean. The setup has a Kuberneter cluster with two nodes each having 2vCPU and 2GB ram and a managed PostgreSQL DB having 1vCPU and 1GB ram. Did a stress test recently and it can handle about 400 active users using the tool simultaneously before the responses slowed down.
- Of course the connection with the database server is encrypted via SSL. Everyone that wants to connect with the database server has to be IP whitelisted. In order to add an address to the whitelist you need 2FA. I think it is a good idea to offer encrypted data storage, but that feature doesn't exist now. It would mean that the user needs to remember an decryption key to access his data. If that key is lost then the data is lost. The whole decryption process could happen on the client side so it stays secure. The only reason I can come up with for someone to actually need this is because they don't trust us with their data in the SaaS environment at https://baserow.io. Those people do have the option right now to self host.
- Advise on the code architecture or the infrastructure?

Thanks for your response. 3rd point would you like to give any advice on the architecture (meaning any pitfalls that you potentially ran into before sticking to what you described above)

This is pretty awesome! Good luck with the rest of your roadmap.

Right now Baserow is in a very early phase and Airtable has more features. The main differences are related to the flexibility. If Airtable would go open source, that would be very bad for Baserow right now. A support page on the Airtable website states the following: "Can Airtable be hosted on-premise? Airtable is a cloud-based SaaS product, and we do not plan on offering an on-premise or self-hosted solution." so I don't expect this, let alone that they open source their software.
A few USP are listed below:
- Open source.
- Can be self hosted.
- Supports plugin. You can create custom fields, views, applications, endpoints etc.
- Unlimited rows. Airtable is limited to 50k.
- Has been build around PostgreSQL which is a relational database.
- The interface is faster if you have lots of data because the pagination, filtering, sorting etc is handled by the backend instead of the frontend.
- I have plans for Baserow to become a complete no-code toolchain. The database/table part is just the beginning.

After hard work next to my regular business I've released an early test version of the product. Everyone can try it out at Baserow and I'm happy to receive feedback! Over the next weeks you can expect new features, bugfixes and the open source release.

I'm a developer for over 10 years and I've always dreamed of building my own SaaS product. When I noticed the lack of open source no-code tools and my own need for a modular online database I decided to start Baserow.

Hey @bramw it's an interesting time you are building Baserow with all the no-code movement starting to pick up momentum and catch the eyes of the industry.
May I know what triggered you to start building Baserow?
You could market Baserow to No-code makers, there is a slack channel for No Code Founders which is very active and receptive to no-code tools.
I noticed a lot of people asking for good open source no-code tools. I also really like how Airtable works, but a SaaS only tool has its limitations. There are lots of successful open source companies, like for example GitLab and Sentry, out there. So that is when the idea for Baserow was born. It started as a side project, but now I am working almost full time on it.
I will look into the No Code Founders, that is very good idea, thanks!
It's a very interesting angle you mention about GitLan and Sentry being open source and successful.
You are also right about users having limitations when using SaaS products. Baserow could very well make a big impact being open source. Wish you all the best with the project. The no-code market would love to use Baserow when you show them how it's easier to more useful than Airtable.
Very exciting progress! I recommend anyone who uses Airtable check this out.
