Block Party

The live minigame network

December 14, 2018 Finding the fun

The Block Party team runs a weekly playtest every Friday at 6pm called Game of the Week where we jump onto Discord and play a game together with the community. It acts as an incredible forcing function to power our feedback loop of building, measuring and learning. Knowing that we have an audience showing up every week to try the latest version of the game creates strong social pressure that aligns us around the shared goal of delivering an engaging entertainment experience.

While it's great to have objective measures of engagement like DAU, session duration and retention to evaluate our results, it's also incredibly valuable to hear directly from players about their experience. Discord's voice channel turns out to be a treasure trove of information, letting us hear from players in the moment of gameplay. Finding the "fun" in a product can be a pretty fickle, subjective process, but hearing the tone of how players talk during our game gives us a really strong signal about what's working and what's not.
