September 15, 2019 Break into Design Launch

Today I was able to ship Breakintodesign.org

Over the past 3 years, I've taught 500+ college students about UX design at both in-person and online schools. Needless to say, I'm very passionate about expanding access to design education.

I think that in order for technology to have a net-positive impact on humanity, we need to make sure that there are more UX + Product folks from many different backgrounds and with many different viewpoints making decisions about the way technology is designed.

The most useful page now is a list of lots of cool design tools https://breakintodesign.org/design-tools

Over the next few months, I plan on launching:

  • a free online fellowship that matches participants with expert mentors
  • a job board for entry-level design positions and internships
  • a Slack community for design folks to share advice on the job search process
  • and much more!

I'll be documenting my journey here!

    Congrats on the launch!

One of the challenges I often read about for new designers is finding one of the few entry level roles. It seems that most companies want, at least, 2-4 years of experience for even junior roles.

    A few thoughts:

    • Pretty often I'm asked by people how to get into design. I'd love to have a single page I could point them to for the first steps (e.g., start reading these books, experimenting with these tasks/projects, etc.).
    • Along similar lines to my first point, I think your homepage could reflect the "I'm new, where do I start?" context people are in when they land here. What you have right now looks like a great directory of resources, but if I was a new designer, I'm not sure where I should start. It reminds me of my current effort to better manage my finances. I want just above the basics, but google-searches, Reddit threads, etc. often dive into "Go get some ETFs, set up a dual-ledger accounting system, and... and..." and I'm lost. Maybe look at the "Idiot's Guide to X" for inspiration." </rant>
    • Looking at Quora/Reddit/etc. threads of "where do I get started" could be really helpful for framing and identify the key pain points new designers are experiencing.

Happy to share more thoughts if you're interested. Good luck and I look forward to following your progress!
