April 17, 2020 93 Behavioural Interview Questions to Prep For

In a behavioural job interview, the interviewer asks behavioural interview questions about your past work experience. Behavioural questions (also known as STAR interview questions or behaviour-based interview questions) focus on how well you handle various work situations. They reveal your skills, abilities, and personality, as well as how suited you are to the role.

This interview technique helps hiring managers to ask questions that can tease out who you are, your skills, and how you approach difficult situations. The idea is past behaviour can often predict future behaviour.

Remember, hiring managers aren't looking for "yes" or "no" answers, but rather specific examples of how you handled a situation in a previous role or project.

The STAR method is a way of answering behavioural questions that works well. It provides a framework to structure your answers into a brief anecdote that illustrates your strengthens, skills, and how you get along with managers and teammates. https://breakout.careers/advice/behavioural-interview-questions/

April 13, 2020 First post on the Breakout Career Advice Blog

The STAR method is a structured manner of responding to behavioural interview questions in job interviews by discussing the specific situation, task, action, and result of the situation you are describing.

The STAR technique provides a clear framework for candidates on how to answer behavioural-based interview questions asked during the interview process.

When used, the STAR interview technique helps job seekers answer interview questions in a succinct way that communicates their past experience and achievements.

Jack here from Breakout Careers. We're happy to answer any questions you might have.

February 12, 2020 Auto social posting and skills

We added auto posting to Twitter, LinkedIn and Facebook. This means that each time a job is posted, we tweet out a unique message to our followers across the three platforms.

Additionally, we added a skills section to jobs which generates a unique landing page of all the jobs tagged with that skill and adds those skills as hashtags on social media to improve findability.

I might be imagining things here, but would you find value in an add-on that will automatically retweet your recent postings on a schedule regularly, from something like an RSS feed that you have for these postings?

The theory is that it seems wasteful (and ineffective) to post these job ads only once on social media given that you actually need maximum visibility for them and your audience might not all be online at the same time.

    Just spitballing here...

      Hey simplisticallysimple,

We'll likely add something like this in the future! Great idea.

      Thanks,

Great job! What service are you using for posting on T, L and F?

    1. 2

Thanks tonixx! We are using the following Ruby gems to simplify posting on T, L & F:

      Twitter: 'twitter' gem - https://github.com/sferik/twitter
      Facebook: 'koala' gem - https://github.com/arsduo/koala
LinkedIn: 'linkedin-v2' gem - https://rubygems.org/gems/linkedin-v2/versions/0.1.5 (and also a mix of direct API calls, since the gem doesn't support all API calls yet)

Great aesthetic. Really clean design work. Where are you pulling the data from and what do your tweets look like?

Thanks Maddoxjack! Design is still a work in progress but it's miles ahead of where we started :) We're pulling data from company websites. As for our tweets, you can see examples on our twitter (https://twitter.com/breakoutcareers)

January 10, 2020 UI/UX Improvements

We spent the holiday period improving the design and user experience of Breakout Careers.

Here's what we did:

  • Added a search bar on all pages that lets you search for jobs by location, skills or company.
  • Improved the homepage by splitting jobs into different groups based on how recent they are, e.g. Today, Yesterday, This Week, This Month
  • Improved the organization page by allowing you to search by industry, location and company name
  • Improved the mobile experience on individual job pages and homepage.

Have a look for yourself and let us know what you think. :)

November 10, 2019 Server-side rendering and asset optimisation

We spend the last week working on server-side rendering and splitting up our asset files to speed up load times and make it easier for search engines to crawl the site to improve our SEO. It'll have the added bonus of making the site easier to use for the end user, they'll be waiting less time on each page load!

Would love to know what impact this has on load times. Keep us posted with any changes you uncover in or search console 👍

Hey man, definitely had a big impact on load times - went from around about 60/100 on web.dev to 90+. :)

October 14, 2019 Location pages

We've added location pages to Breakout Careers. This is largely an SEO strategy to capture high intent keywords like "Sydney Startup Jobs" or "Melbourne Startup Jobs". As the pages are indexed, we should see a nice uptick in traffic, which in turn will help more people find jobs at great startups in Australia. See Surry Hills example below.

September 2, 2019 Design refresh

We've updated our jobs and company pages to make it easier to navigate, see how many jobs each company is hiring for, and see more jobs. This is part of a wider design refresh design to make the site faster on a slower connection and improve time on site.

August 26, 2019 Australian Tech Company and Startup Database

We've added an Australian Tech Company and Startup Database to Breakout Careers. This gives you a view into every tech company and startup we have listed on the platform and a quick way to find out more about them and what jobs they're hiring for.

We're planning to add a lot more to the company pages soon.

August 3, 2019 Improved cross-linking and added basic analytics

Spend the day today improving the internal cross-linking of the site by adding version one of related companies to the company pages, company jobs and related jobs to the job pages, as well as hotjar and drift via segment.

Now we're watching time on site to see if there's an uptick.
