Fast converter to change images and PDFs into black & white

August 24, 2026 I got tired of "free" image converters uploading private photos to random servers, so I built a 100% in-browser tool.

Hey IH community 👋

I wanted to share the story behind my latest side project, BWConverter, and why I decided to build a tool in what seems like a crowded space.

The Frustration That Sparked It

A while ago, I needed to convert a batch of photos and a document PDF into black and white for a printing project.

Like most people, I googled for a quick online converter. But almost every top result gave me the same frustrating experience:

1. Privacy Concerns: They forced me to upload my private files to their remote cloud servers.

2. Speed & Delays: Uploading heavy images and waiting for server rendering took forever on a slow connection.

3. Artificial Barriers: Arbitrary file size limits, aggressive watermarks, or mandatory account registrations just to download a simple file.

I kept asking myself: Why does turning a photo black and white in 2026 require sending data across the globe to a third-party server? Modern browsers are essentially mini operating systems. Canvas APIs, Web Workers, and WebAssembly can process images locally in milliseconds.

So, I decided to build the solution I wanted to use myself.

What is BWConverter?

BWConverter is a fast, privacy-first web utility that converts photos, logos, and PDFs to black and white 100% locally in your browser.

  • Zero Server Uploads: Your photos and PDF documents never leave your device. Everything is processed right inside your browser's local memory.

  • Instant Processing: No network upload/download latency. Drag, drop, and download instantly.

  • No Paywalls or Watermarks: Completely free to use for single photos, logos, and full multi-page PDFs.

Tech Stack & Lessons Learned

I built the project using Next.js 14, Tailwind CSS, and leveraged client-side Canvas API and PDF.js for document rendering.

A few key takeaways from building this:

  • The "Zero-Server" Advantage: Because all heavy image processing happens on the user’s device, my server costs are virtually zero. This allows me to keep the core tool 100% free without locking basic features behind a paywall.

  • SEO & Global Internationalization: I recently expanded localization support for multiple languages (English, Spanish, German, Japanese) and optimized technical SEO. It’s been an incredible learning journey watching how search engines index localized utility routes.

  • Monetization via Respectful Ads: To cover domain and minor infrastructure costs, I integrated Journey by Mediavine for display ads, making sure they don't intrusive on the core user workflow.

What’s Next?

I’m currently exploring adding a few new privacy-friendly features, such as offline PWA support and an optional AI-powered photo colorization tool for restoring old family photographs.

I’d love to get your honest feedback:

  • How is the user experience and speed on your end?

  • Are there any specific format or image adjustment features you'd like to see?

Thanks for reading, and happy hacking! 🚀
