Caato Time Tracker
Hassle-free time tracking apps for macOS and iOS
I've been launching a new onboarding feature for the macOS app a few days ago and while it's still early days there are is already something I learnt which I didn't quite expect.
In the past days only about 25% of all new users that started the onboarding have actually finished it. Since it's an interactive onboarding feature that is integrated in the app I would have thought that it would be more like 50-75%.
Now I haven't added analytics for each step of the onboarding yet so I don't know if it's a particular step that is harder (or more annoying) than I thought. Adding those events will be helpful to better understand where users are leaving the onboarding process.
Another question which I don't have an answer to yet: "Should I delay showing the link to leave the onboarding so that users are more likely to immerge into the onboarding"?
I always thought that our macOS app Caato Time Tracker+ was so easy and intuitive that new users get started easily without any guiding. However it turns out that in addition to some negative app store reviews I've been getting support requests around basic functionality for a while now. So it doesn't seem to be that easy after all. To improve the experience for new users I've now added a 5-step onboarding feature and I'm curious to see what users will say and if it improves retention over time.

Our Caato Time Tracker+ iOS app is currently just a companion app for the macOS app and can't be used on its own because projects and activities for time tracking have to be setup on the macOS app first. This limitation is due to a macOS-first strategy that we've been following so far. As a result the iOS app has hardly any users and even for those users the app isn't that useful.
I've recently looked into ways to grow our user base and one of them is to make our iOS app more useful and usable on its own so that we can establish a new funnel of iOS-first users.
While it's a big chunk of work to get there, I decided to release a range of small updates and incrementally improve the app so that users benefit from improvements early and I can focus on getting each step right. In addition to that I'd like to see if putting in the work is actually worth it and if the user base can be increased over time.
Looking at statistics in iTunes Connect the number of users has only slightly increased while sessions have doubled!

We created Caato Time Tracker when we were working as an app agency for multiple clients and needed something very simple to track our time for multiple projects that didn't require any setup.
