Cakedesk

Invoicing app for freelancers

February 17, 2023 My 7th week of marketing efforts

Hey everybody! It's been a week since my last update, so I'm here to tell you all what I've been doing to market my simple invoicing application Cakedesk this week and what kind of results I got.

2 bloggers reviewed Cakedesk

I've been reaching out to smaller bloggers the past weeks, asking them to review Cakedesk. I got a lot of positive responses and this week the first 2 reviews went live.

They're both very positive luckily and it seems like bloggers are happy to spread the word for a small dev! So far, I haven't gotten any traffic from these posts yet but who knows how they will pay off in the long term as these bloggers' sites become more popular!

Built my first comparison page

Following the recommendation of many of you guys here, I finally got around to building a simple comparison page (GrandTotal alternative).

I did my best to display a fair comparison, since I do think my competitor here is building a nice product that is serving a different kind of user.

There's a lot I can do still. Particularly the page doesn't have many CTAs right now but I wanted to get it out there so Google can start indexing the page.

Launched on Product Hunt

Last Sunday I launched Cakedesk on Product Hunt.

Something funny happened with the launch that gave Cakedesk a head-start in terms of upvotes:

While I was scheduling Cakedesk to launch 2 days earlier, I must have misclicked something and Cakedesk was launched early (Friday instead of Sunday). It picked up a few upvotes organically in the few hours the post was up before somebody from the PH staff was kind of enough to correct my mistakes and schedule the launch for Sunday again.

It seems like these early upvotes stayed around on launch day and gave Cakedesk a head-start! Maybe a nice little hack for anybody else launching on PH soon: "Accidentally" launch your product, get some upvotes and then ask PH staff to take it offline again! ;D

PH launch prep

I didn't make an elaborate launch preparation and simply used the "Coming Soon" page to tweet about my upcoming launch 2 days earlier.

I wish I had created the coming soon page at least a week earlier, it would have given my product some more time and exposure on the coming soon page, allowing it to get noticed and find more supporters.

PH launch results

Cakedesk was on place 4 for most of the launch on Sunday. However, it ended closing in 5th place.

In total, the PH launch got me around 1000 visitors and around 75 downloads. Nobody took advantage of the big PH discount (40% off), so I assume most of these downloads and visits were not from potential users, just other indie hackers or product people. :)

Conclusion

This week was a bit slow, despite the PH launch bringing me a lot of visitors. I didn't have too much time to spend on marketing my product but I'm glad I made a little bit of progress here and there. :)

My priorities are the same as last week. I will continue reaching out to bloggers and writing content on the Cakedesk website that will hopefully get indexed eventually :)

Thanks for reading! I hope you all have a nice weekend!

    Hey Macks,

Think I've commented on one of your marketing updates before so forgive me if I'm repeating myself to you here - but the issue you're running into is that very few freelancers are actively looking to buy invoicing software.

That's not a problem with your product, it's the same for any product and any market: only a tiny percentage of any business's target audience is actively looking to buy right now.

The vast majority of your marketing efforts are falling on the ears of those who aren't looking for what you are selling - which is why you're getting only a few sales.

Lots of people would tell you the solution is to find a way to get in front of freelancers that are actively looking to buy right now but that's super hard to do organically and super expensive to do with paid advertising.

The way forward is to adapt your marketing to speak to and persuade those freelancers not actively looking to buy a new invoicing solution.

    There's two major advantages:

    a) You're already reaching them - they make up 99% of freelancers out there
    b) They're an unlimited resource that your competitors aren't reaching effectively

You just need to adapt your message to reach them as you can't pitch them your product.

I talk about this in more depth in a post I made the other day so instead of just repeating myself I'll link to it - https://www.indiehackers.com/post/what-mrr-are-you-stuck-at-853120cb28

Hope that helps, feel free to ask any questions

    Best

    Chris

February 10, 2023 Another marketing week in review (#6)

Hi everybody! Another week has passed and I'm here to report my marketing efforts from the past week and what happened!

Quick info: I'm building Cakedesk a simple invoicing app for freelancers. A product that scratches my own itch in a verrrry crowded marketing.

It's been a pretty exciting week so far! Here's why:

One more sale!

Last weekend I had yet again another sale! Feels good! Hope they keep coming and becoming more regular over time!

Edit: Live on Product Hunt today! (Sunday, February 12)

Cakedesk is live on Product Hunt today!

I'll for sure be reporting what happened in next week's weekly marketing review.

Check out how it's going here:

👉 Cakedesk on Product Hunt

Built a new feature

OK, this is technically not marketing but it does allow me to present some nicer-looking screenshots of my app on the website, so I'm counting it!

It's an overview screen that shows you a bunch of stats about your business:

I also recorded a little short for it for YouTube/Instagram/TikTok:

Improved Lighthouse score of the website

I was getting a little warning in Google Search Console about a bad lighthouse score, specifically some layout shifts. I fixed some warnings regarding this and I'm now mostly in the green. Just need a little bit more work on the performance!

Paused TikTok videos and shorts

The past weeks I was posting a lot of TikTok videos and shorts. I'm putting this on pause, since it takes a lot of time and doesn't seem to give me long-term traffic. If I don't post, traffic goes away.

So I'm spending more time on reaching out to bloggers:

Reached out to 40+ bloggers

It's actually sooo hard to find blogs these days! Whenever I google for relevant blogs, I always get results from SEO agencies etc.

So I went digging through a bunch of German blog directories and started reaching out to blogs that are

  1. Not SEO spam
  2. Not all paid advertising and affiliates
  3. Still alive

I have a list of 50 blogs, reached out to about 40 so far. Following up after 1 week of no answers and my response rate is actually pretty good!

These results are way better than when I was reaching out to US bloggers a few weeks ago.

Many small bloggers from my own country seem happy to write a review or an article to help out a small dev. Nothing has been posted so far but I got a bunch of people telling me they'll write something!

Offers for paid article features

A couple of the blogs I contacted were bigger sites and I've received a few offers to be included in their listicles for payment, usually between 300€ and 1000€. Some of them seem like they could pay off, so I'll think about engaging one next week maybe.

Daily interaction on Twitter

Every day, I'm looking for tweets that are related to freelancing and invoicing apps on Twitter and interacting with them a bit.

This brings some users every day and doesn't take remotely as long as making short videos!

Conclusion

I'm excited to see how many blogs will end up covering Cakedesk. Moving forward, I want to keeping reach out to more sites and also post some SEO-enabling content, like comparison pages.

As always, happy to hear everybody's ideas and feedback! And hope you all have a great weekend! :)

Have you thought about creating a twitter bot or something to alert you of the types of tweets you're looking for? Could also outreach to Upwork contractors.

    1. 1

I was just using bookmarks to Twitter searches to find tweets. If I get more sophisticated with, using a tool and maybe even Upwork would be a good idea though, thanks :)

      1. 1

Cold email outreach to high ranking Upwork workers could be a good way to get a handful of users!

  2. 1

how are you reaching out to the bloggers? just manual 1-1 emails?

    1. 1

Yeah! Just a short email asking if they would be willing to write a review and offering them a free license key to test the app :)

February 3, 2023 Marketing week #5 - the retrospective

Hello everyone, I'm checking in again with another marketing week update for my invoicing app Cakedesk!

Previous updates:

Had another sale

Super happy to report that I had another organic sale last weekend! I don't see this user in my product analytics but I'll see if I can find a way to contact him.

Prepared the Product Hunt Launch

I took a bunch of screenshots and prepared the listing for my Product Hunt launch, which I'm scheduling for next week.

This is the preview of my listing:

If anybody has feedback on how I can make this look more interesting / attractive, I'm happy to hear it. :)

My current thinking is that I'll launch on the weekend, since there will be less competition from big brand names and people who are optimizing their launch very hard.

Continued posting shorts

This week, as well as the previous one, I continued posting shorts to TikTok, YouTube and Instagram every day. The views haven't been as great and I'm slowly running out of ideas of the "main stream" things to demo about my app.

Moving forward, I would need to create more generic content about freelancing. I have a lot of ideas for this but I'm not sure if it's worth it, since it will be tricky to sneak in a little bit of advertising for Cakedesk without it being annoying.

Dipped my toes into influencer marketing

I posted a campaign to Ainfluencer to see how the process works. Nobody sent any offers, so it looks like you need to invite influencers.

I might try this when I have a little bit of extra money to spend on advertising.

Submitted to a bunch of startup directories

I took the list of product directories from another thread here on Indiehackers. Since I'm having a hard time finding valuable resources on Google these days, I find myself searching "<something> indiehackers" a lot. :)

It took a lot of time to submit to all these directories. I also made sure to include unique descriptions for every one. ChatGPT helped a lot with this. I couldn't have imagined paraphrasing my product description 20 times myself!

Heard back from some bloggers

Some bloggers that I had reached out to last week got back to me about a review for Cakedesk.

Depending on the page, it seems to cost between 300€ and 5000€ to get reviewed or mentioned in a listicle on small-medium sized sites.

I find this a little bit frustrating, since I'm not ready to spend money on advertising yet. 300€ for some SEO juice might be a good deal though.

Conclusion

I've been doing more of the same this week. It looks like social media is driving most traffic and downloads for me at the moment.

Not sure how long I can keep this up because it takes up a lot of time creating on social media, so I'm thinking I should maybe refocus on longer-term items like SEO and higher-leverage opportunities, like reaching out to more bloggers and the Product Hunt launch.

There's also a bunch of helpful feedback I've been getting from fellow product builders on IndieHackers and elsewhere that I still need to try out.

If you have any more ideas or feedback, would love to hear from you! :)

Hope you all have a great weekend!

Can you provide the "Submitted to a bunch of startup directories" list? Some of the websites I haven't seen before.

    1. 1

Hi man, I made a list of 50+ places that includes directories, websites and launch platforms. Dropping the link below, check it out and let me know your thoughts

Awesome! Great list, thanks for sharing! :)

RE Social media: have you thought about making it more general for freelancers where you make content freelancers in general agree with / can learn from / find entertaining? That way you can probably built a following more easily (as invoicing is just not as sexy and mostly a pain for people:P). You can then just plug your product every now and then.

    1. 1

Hi! Yes, definitely and there are a lot of things I can cover in this area. Right now I'm not sure though if I want to keep going with TikTok and social media as it is super time-consuming and the traffic stops coming the moment I stop posting

  5. 1

Nice one!! Keep it up! Looking forward to ProductHunt launch

  6. 1

Thank you for sharing your journey so far! this is helping me tremendously since i am also planning on launching my app ideas.

    All the best for Cakedesk!

Thanks for the feedback, glad you're enjoying the posts! What are you launching?

January 27, 2023 My 4th marketing week in review

Hello everyone, I'm checking in again with another marketing week update for my invoicing app Cakedesk!

Previous updates:

Had my first sale since launch

Last weekend, somebody bought a license for Cakedesk which is my first sale since my launch!

This user downloaded the app and bought it on the same day as far as I can tell, without even having reached the limits of the free version yet, which is interesting.

Posted a short to TikTok, YouTube and Instagram every day

This week I pre-recorded some shorts on the weekend and posted one every day.

Curated beautiful invoice designs

I created a page on the Cakedesk website to showcase some great-looking invoice designs: Invoice design inspiration

I promoted this collection on the graphic design subreddit which gave me some traffic, although none of these visitors converted into downloads as far as I can tell.

I also submitted it to muz.li. Not sure how long the wait times are there but I'm hoping it will get picked up at some point.

Created Twitter account for Cakedesk

Since TikTok is going OK for promoting Cakedesk, I created a dedicated Twitter account for Cakedesk: @cakedeskapp

It will definitely take a while for this account to become a relevant traffic source but why not start early!

Started outreach to bloggers

I created a press kit for Cakedesk and started reaching out to bloggers who might consider covering Cakedesk.

I'm using Streak CRM (this is a referral link that gives us both extra free quota) to create a pipeline of people to reach out to.

My cold email:

My pipeline:

Adjusted landing page wording

Hoping to show off more benefits on my landing page, I changed the wording a little bit.

Left is before, right is after:

Week in review

Getting a first sale was really nice!

I'm also starting to feel more and more how crowded this market is that I'm in.

Also: every day I didn't market the app, I didn't have very many visitors on my site, so I definitely need to keep active.

Moving forward, I want to keep posting shorts regularly and try to get bloggers to write about Cakedesk (or write guest articles myself).

I'm also thinking about maybe trying a Product Hunt launch. Even though I don't think my target audience is there, the attention from PH could be helpful in getting some press.

If you have any marketing tips for me, I would love to hear from you!

Hope you all have a great weekend! :)

Hi. I'm enjoying following your journey of marketing experiments – thanks for sharing. In terms of feedback, a couple of things jumped out about your front page:

    1. TARGET AUDIENCE

"The simple invoicing app for freelancers"

So you're targeting freelancers, huh? That's a huuuuuge audience and I assume most other invoicing apps are targeting the same people. It might help to differentiate yourself for a few reasons:

    • Less competition.
    • Easier for you to identify potential customers and go where they hang out.
    • Higher likelihood of people thinking your offering is relevant to them.

On the last point, a similar example might be somebody producing mugs with dog pictures on. They could advertise as "Love animals? You'll love our mugs." (too broad, easy to overlook), or "Love dogs? You'll love our mugs." (better but still bland) or "Love poodles and coffee? You'll love our mugs." The most specific one is more likely to get a "yes that's me!" reaction from a few people who'll want to keep reading. I think it's better to aim for a strong reaction from a small audience than a weak reaction from a large audience.

Is there a particular type of freelancer that you've seen the best reaction from so far? That could be a starting point. Once you have your target audience you can then tweak your headline, also removing unnecessary words to make it snappier, e.g.:

    "Simple invoicing for photographers"

    1. PRODUCT BENEFITS

Your top bullet points say "create", "write", "create" which implies work and may put people off. A quick fix is to just drop these verbs, e.g.

    • Beautiful invoices in seconds
    • Proposals that win deals

For the third point, "Create your own invoice designs with HTML & CSS", this implies a lot of work! The freelancers I know are usually busy with client work and don't want to spend time creating something if it's not making money, but they do like being in control. Here are some other possible phrasings (change to US spelling if necessary):

    • Fully customisable with HTML & CSS
    • Elegant designs, fully customisable
    • Multiple customisable templates

I'd argue that "For Windows and macOS" is a feature, not a benefit, and doesn't deserve that prime position. In any case, when I clicked "Download now" it automatically gave me the macOS file, so I don't need to know which platforms are supported.

Speaking of "Download now", you could experiment with "Try it now", which implies less work and commitment.

    1. PAIN POINT

Finally, and perhaps most importantly, I'd make sure you fully understand the pain point of your target audience and highlight that you can solve their problem. Go to where your target audience hang out and look for terms like "I wish", "frustrating", etc. to see what annoys them. Then use that insight to craft your messaging.

Within those target communities, you might get better engagement and feedback if you ask questions rather than just tell people about your app, such as: How are they currently dealing with the problem? What workarounds do they have? Has it always been that bad? What would the ideal solution look like?

If you're lucky, you could get one or two people who can help you one-to-one by explaining their problem, testing your app as you tweak it, and then providing a testimonial or sharing it in their network.

Sorry that's a bit long but I hope it helps! Oh, and one more thing… personally I'd drop the "I hope I'm contacting you at the right email address." line from your cold email. Shorter is better. :-)

    1. 2

Hi @tagawa! Wow, thanks so much for the detailed feedback. You providing examples specifically for my page is super helpful and you have a lot of very good points!

      ## 1. Target Audience

You're right, the "freelancer" niche is probably too broad. Originally I was targeting the "freelance craftsman" because of the ability to customize using HTML/CSS. As far as I can tell, all my customers so far have been buying the app for this ability.

I've been having a hard time finding more of these types of users, which is why I broadened the messaging a bit. Maybe I need to rethink this.

In general, I'm thinking of the following differentiating features that my app has compared to others:

      • Highly customizable due to HTML&CSS features (speaks to the technical craftsmen, who care a lot about the presentation of their brand, even on invoices)
      • Less risky to adopt for beginners (free to start and no monthly fees)
      • Desktop software that is fast and works offline (could speak to people who value good usability and performance)
      • Ability to create very detailed proposals and invoices because you can nest invoice items and add rich text descriptions (not sure who specifically this speaks to but some users have mentioned this in their onboardings)
      • All data is stored privately on your own device (speaks to super privacy-aware people, some users mentioned this as well)

      ## 2. Product Benefits

Now that you say it, it seems so obvious. I can shorten a bunch of wordings on the site and make them sound more effortless.

"Try it now!" does sound a lot better than "Download now"!

Also you're right about Windows/macOS. I put it there because I didn't know where else to put it but I can find a better place!

      Thanks so much for this!

      ## 3. Pain Point

I think this is the part where I'm having the hardest time. My early users who I onboarded personally (and ended up buying the app) all were excited about the HTML/CSS templating features.

They found me through Twitter and apparently the app was shared around a bit in a community of Kirby CMS users.

Since then, I've had a hard time finding more of these types of users. When marketing the app on Reddit and TikTok, I get the feeling that most people there don't care about the customizability. But they seem to like the proposal features that make it easy to break down a project into small pieces.

Part of my thinking is also: every freelancer needs to write invoices. So if I can get freelancers who are just getting started, I think my app could be attractive because it doesn't have monthly fees or anything like that.

So I'm a bit wishy-washy at the moment because I'm not so sure who I'm targeting and who to go after:

      • Is it the craftsmen?
      • Is it people who like the proposal functionality?
      • Is it beginner freelancers?

      ---

Thanks again for the super-specific suggestions. I'll definitely be re-reading your comment several times and making adjustments and thinking more about all the things you said!

  2. 2

    Congrats @macks!
You should definitely launch your product on PH just to review the impression and to get right feedbacks from the community.

Good luck on your journey. I love it!

    1. 1

Thanks @ozenc! Will look into PH for sure 🤓

  3. 1

Great post-series, I enjoy reading about marketing struggles that all of us have.

Anyways I wanted to tell you/ask you about the most critical feature that an invoicing app needs. Tax-related exports for government bodies! This is usually the reason why some local invoicing apps thrive, because global products don't care about country specifics... I saw that you are from Germany, does that mean you don't need anything like that? How easy it is to submit VAT-related reports every month/quarter to the government?

Is it your assumption that people use a separate app for creating invoices, while having another application to deal with taxes?

I just wanted to let you know, because I use a Czech invoicing app specifically for this reason, so I can export and sent my reports with one click.

    1. 1

      Hi Petr,

thanks a lot for the thoughts and feedback! We definitely have some German applications that create invoices and also do the accounting. This is something that's in the back of my head but it's a huge set of features to take on.

My current users either have a separate tool just for accounting (with those tools I could also interface via APIs / file exports) or have their tax lawyers do the accounting for them.

But yeah, it might come to the point where people are telling me that they need certain accounting features in order for Cakedesk to be interesting to them.

  4. 1

Here are some steps you can take to review your 4th marketing week:

Review key metrics: Look at metrics such as website traffic, conversion rates, lead generation, and customer acquisition to assess the success of your marketing efforts.

Analyze the results: Evaluate what worked well and what didn't, and make data-driven decisions to adjust your strategy accordingly.

Identify areas for improvement: Identify any areas where you can make changes to improve your marketing performance, such as optimizing your website, refining your messaging, or reaching out to a new target audience.

Collaborate with team members: Work with your marketing team to share insights and ideas, and to develop new strategies.

Set new goals: Based on your review, set new goals for the next week or month and develop a plan to achieve them.

Stay up to date: Keep learning about new marketing trends and best practices, and apply them to your strategy where relevant.

  5. 1

    Really impressive review @macks

    1. 1

      Thanks Eric!

  6. 1

Great update - I wonder how the shorts & reels & tiktok game will play out over the long run. Do you think you'll focus in on one over the other?

    1. 2

Thanks! I don't think I'll focus on one over the other since I just record the video once and then post it everywhere

  7. 1

Love the changes to the LP! I think you made a great decision with the new copy. The word "simple" is really eye catching and smart here.

    1. 1

      Thanks Tom!

  8. 1

I admire the hustle. Leaving no rock unturned. No excuses.

What tool are you using for the screenshots? The rounded borders, blurred background and drop shadow have a nice effect. I'd love to use that for my product screenshots.

    1. 1

Thanks Ryan! I'm using CleanShot X and its built-in background tool: https://cleanshot.com/

      1. 1

Awesome. Bought it and used it, thanks!

    1. 1

Thanks Jamie, glad you're enjoying the posts!

  11. 1

I think in the long term you should make this into something like spp.co or manyrequests.com than just a simple invoice designing tool. That would be very useful for freelancers and agencies.

    1. 1

Those look like very cool products! They target bigger agencies though. Right now, my product is more focused on the individual freelancer.

Maybe if my own freelancing business evolves into something bigger, I will build something like the above products 😋

  12. 1

Hi, do you have insights about what works well or not for shorts? I think they match my use case well, but so far I haven't gotten much traction.

    1. 1

Hi @rosmine, I'm also not so sure about this and just starting out making these. So far, it's nice to see that they seem to get pushed out to quite a bit of users on TikTok at least. Hashtags seem to be important and keeping your video short and snappy. I don't know much more than that

  13. 1

Echoing what everyone else is saying — these updates are really great, keep it up!

Out of curiosity, where did you get your email pipeline CRM? I do a lot of outreach myself and something like that would be super helpful.

    1. 1

      Thanks @AverageJoeDeveloper!

This CRM I'm using here is Streak CRM for GMail. It has a free plan which is why I chose it :)

  14. 1

I had been patiently waiting for you to post week 4's marketing update 😹

    Congratulations on your first sale!

Quick question, what was your process of finding leads of bloggers to contact and how you found their email addresses?

    1. 1

      Thanks @Mundia! :)

I mostly just searched "invoicing tool for freelancers" or something like that on Google and all these listicle articles came up. On most of those pages, the author is linked with a way to contact them. In other cases, the site itself has a "Contact us" section somewhere.

So I just manually went through all those articles and noted down the authors.

So far, I got two responses from sites and they're telling me that I can buy a review or mention from them.

  15. 1

It's great to see how you're doing this week by week. Looking forward to seeing how things continue to grow in the coming weeks!

    1. 1

Thanks @Gav, I will keep going!

  16. 1

Great write-up Macks and keep going!! Did you reach out to the person who purchased? It would be really useful for you to find out why they purchased, who they are etc as it might give an indication of where you need to focus. One person is not enough to make any firm decisions of course, but I would definitely interview your early sales as they can help. You would do it under the guise of helping them to get set up and make the most of Cakedesk.

    1. 1

      Hi @adeinov! Thanks!!

Actually the customer reached out to me because he had a support request. From that, I kind of learned why he purchased (ability to customize using HTML/CSS). Unfortunately, a conversation did not develop with him, so maybe I should reach out directly again to get some more info.

  17. 1

Man!! Shall I tell you something? You rock! I am learning a lot from your marketing week review posts. Thank you so much.

Suggestions : Have you tried cold emailing Freelancers? Maybe ask them to give it a try and give you a feedback on what they feel about your app. Ask them a few questions like what app they currently use and what features they miss in it, the facebook groups they participate in and so on. Hope this helps :)

Haha thanks so much Harish! Thanks for the encouragement and I'm glad you're getting some value from these posts :)

I have tried "cold-tweeting" freelancers a little bit. When I was doing this, I wasn't very specific in my targeting but I think if I can go more narrow, the cold outreach could be more effective. Thanks for the suggestion :)

January 20, 2023 Marketing week #3 – here's what happened

Hello everyone, I'm checking in again with another marketing week update!

Previous updates:

Friday, Jan 6

I posted a short to YouTube, Instagram and TikTok.

Saturday, Jan 7

Since I was starting to get some daily downloads but not hearing much back from new users (and they can download the app without leaving their email address), I built a little feedback widget for Cakedesk:

Sunday, Jan 8

I posted a short to YouTube, Instagram and TikTok.

I published article to Medium: Don’t use Word to write invoices for your freelance business

I posted a German article on the Cakedesk website. This is a long-term SEO measure for some very competitive keywords but I guess it's good to start early!

Monday, Jan 9

I posted a new short to YouTube, Instagram and TikTok

I posted another German SEO article to the Cakedesk website.

Tuesday, Jan 10

My guest article on a German business blog went live that contains a subtle little promo.

I posted on the WorkOnline subreddit but my post got deleted. :(

I posted my "How to write a web development proposal" (which was pretty successful on Reddit last week) to some Facebook groups but got basically no attention. I don't even know how to find these videos in the groups anymore. I don't like Facebook!

I also posted the same video to dev.to but it didn't get much attention there either. Probably because it's a fresh account where I don't have any followers or anything like that.

I posted another short to YouTube, Instagram and TikTok.

I also left some comments on some articles about Freelancing on Medium. Hoping to get people to check out my profile and then see my other articles. Not sure if that's an appropriate strategy for Medium since the comments for an article are always a little bit hard to find.

Wednesday, Jan 11

I reached out to 10 influencers on TikTok. I offered them coupon/discount codes for giveaways or revenue sharing. One responded, offering to publish a video for $750. I don't want to spend money like that yet though, while I'm not making Money from Cakedesk.

Posted Cakedesk to Designer News.

This actually got me some visitors and was on the front page for a while, even though it only has two upvotes in total. The upvote was from my friend. 🤓

I noticed that a lot of my pages weren't indexed, so I created a sitemap and submitted it to Google Search Console. Tip: If you're using Next.js, this is really easy with the next-sitemap package.

Thursday, Jan 12

Published a small article about writing invoices in Germany (another long-term SEO measure):

Posted another short to YouTube, Instagram and TikTok.

Week in review

I'm definitely starting to see more traffic come to my site and I've been averaging 3.7 downloads per day for the last 7 days.

The TikTok videos seem to be working OK. YouTube is also starting to pick up a little bit. I'm getting some users from these videos even though they're not going super viral or anything like that.

I was trying to do a lot of things at the same time: SEO articles, vertical videos, Medium articles, reaching out to influencers. It's spreading me a little thin and really draining my energy.

What's frustrating me at the moment, is that I have some downloads but I'm not getting feedback from users. I'm thinking about asking for a contact email either before/after download or during initial setup.

If you have feedback or suggestions about my marketing efforts, please leave a comment! :)

Have a great weekend!

These posts are really cool ! Would be curious to know what kind of breakdown you see between the different acquisition channels: video content vs search vs written content (IH, blog posts)...

    1. 1

Hey, glad you like the posts! Here's a breakdown of my conversions of the last 30 days by traffic source.

Direct traffic and search engines will be from videos posted to Reddit, TikTok, Instagram, YouTube, since I didn't link the app there directly.

      1. 1

Conversion rates for videos are not bad at all. Keep up the good work +1

  2. 3

Love reading these every week :) Re: not getting feedback from users. Have you thought about 1:1 onboarding? I read a couple of companies do this - if I recall correctly, Superhuman has a case study about it.

How it might work - set up a call with each user to get to know their interests, background, etc. Give a quick demo, and be around to answer questions. It might lower your download rate, but it might give you a better quality of early adopters.

    1. 1

Hi Allison, I'm glad you're enjoying the posts!

When I first launched Cakedesk, this is how the onboarding worked. Those onboarding calls were super helpful actually and a lot of them converted into users/paying customers along the way. You're right, maybe I should think about doing that again 🤔

  3. 1

Going to have to try next-sitemap. I've been managing mine manually and it's been a massive pain. Thanks for the tip! 🍻

January 13, 2023 My second marketing week - all my actions and results

Last Friday I wrote about my first marketing week here.

I got so much helpful feedback and ideas from it, so thank you everybody first of all!

Here's what I did since them. This time I actually got a few nice results!

Friday, Jan 6

Ported another template

I ported another template "Riverside" to Cakedesk and made a comment on the Figma community file.

This is the third template I have now ported and I'm hardly getting traffic from Figma.com. At least it's not attributed in my Analytics. I'm not sure if the direct hits I see could also be from there

Saturday, Jan 7

Posted on Reddit for Showoff Saturday

I posted my app on the webdev Subreddit for Showoff Saturday.

Added testimonials to my site

I added some testimonials from early access users to my site. This should improve conversion rates.

Wrote an article

This is kind of a longer term SEO measure, I wrote an article called Don’t use Word to write invoices for your freelance business and published it on the Cakedesk website.

Sunday, Jan 8

Time for a break

I took a break that day but woke up to find so many comments on my Indie Hackers post from Friday and it was at the top of the homepage. So nice!

Monday, Jan 9

Cold-tweeted some users

I found and reached out to 20 potential users on Twitter. I casted the net fairly wide. This took approximately 4 hours. 😵‍💫

I got one helpful response from somebody who isn't interested in becoming a user himself, but he pointed me to a Tweet of somebody looking for an invoicing app.

This made me discover some relevant search query that would bring up a few freelancers looking for invoicing software. For example, I got to reply in this thread:

I need to get better at reaching these kinds of people organically (I'm not spending money on ads at the moment).

Tuesday, Jan 10

Posted a video to Reddit

I had already made a video called How to write a web development proposal for YouTube a few months ago that didn't reach many people.

I posted this same video to the webdev-subreddit and it was received pretty well there.

This is the the marketing effort that has gotten me the most visitors and downloads so far. Users from Reddit were downloading the app at about 10-15% conversion rate.

Thanks to @fstanev for giving me some insight on how to use Reddit to get users.

I need to find more communities that I can post similar content to.

Submitted Cakedesk to AlternativeTo

I submitted Cakedesk to AlternativeTo.

This by itself hasn't done much (yet) but I'm hoping to send users there at some point to leave a review.

Wednesday, Jan 11

Wrote another article

I put my how-to-video from the day before into article format and posted it to the Cakedesk website: How to write a web development proposal

This is mostly an SEO effort although I should try to find people looking for advice on this subject and link it to them directly as well.

Translated an article to German

I translated my article about using Word for invoicing to German. Translation is so easy these days with Google Translate and the GPT tools, it feels like a very productive thing to do.

Published article to Medium

I published my how-to-article to Medium.

So far it's hardly getting views but there must be a lot of people reading on Medium, so I wonder how these articles can be made to reach more people on there. I need to read up on that!

Cakedesk is 5/5 😎

I saw that Cakedesk got reviewed 5/5 on Softpedia. I don't think this site is a big deal. It isn't driving much traffic but it feels like a nice pat on the back and I can use it to build trust on my landing page.

Thursday, Jan 12

Time for TikTok

I made a vertical video and posted it to YouTube, Instagram and TikTok.

This was a lot of fun to make even though my video editing process at the moment is painfully slow.

Thanks to @IMPixel for suggesting TikTok to me!

I don't have many results from this yet but I'm excited to learn more about how to make these videos so that they reach a wider audience and convert into users.

Week in review

I tried a lot of things and it feels good to get the word out more. It's still not enough to have an impact but I'm starting to see quite a bit more traffic and downloads.

With my efforts on Reddit, I feel like I really reached some people. Unfortunately the visitors stop coming after ~2 days when the post is gone from the front page of the subreddit.

It really helped me to focus completely on marketing this week and not building any more features.

If anybody has feedback or suggestions, I would love to hear from you in the comments!

Have a nice weekend, everybody!

Super interesting post, definitely going to try out some of these ideas for myself.

As for your cold tweeting experiment: I'd suggest using a social listening tool to find leads that way. Shameless plug: I built one myself and you can probably use the search query you already made in here as well. The major benefit being that it's totally passive, also includes Reddit and HN, and you won't have to spend 4 hours doing it manually again 😛

    1. 1

Thanks Amos! Interesting tool, I've signed up to try it out. I really like that you already have "freelancers" as an audience. The only thing I didn't quite understand was the Twitter integration. Is it enabled or not for the audience I've selected?

      Thanks,
      Max

      1. 1

Atm it's only enabled for audiences you've created yourself, but I have plans to streamline it. Sorry for the confusion 😅

        1. 1

Ah ok, I'll have to try a custom audience then!

  2. 2

It's looking good. You can increase response if there is a call to action that is also tied to a specific date. Keep up the great work.

    1. 2

Thanks! Yeah, I'm trying to keep a balance between providing useful content and advertising the app. Will definitely experiment more with CTAs :)

  3. 2

Great job! When posting on tiktok and instagram have you used your personal account or created a new account for your app?

  4. 2

Really liking these marketing focussed articles, keep it up!

  5. 2

It's really helpful and motivating to see everything you did while advertising your startup this week -- coming from someone who has been doing the same for the past 2 or 3 weeks :)

Out of curiosity, what CMS do you use for your blog posts? I use a pretty convoluted method of Wordpress -> Zapier -> Airtable haha

    1. 1

Thanks, I'm glad you find it helpful!

Haha wow, Wordpress, Zapier, Airtable! Why is it so complicated? ^_^

The Cakedesk site is a Next.js app, so I just use markdown/mdx to write the blog posts.

      1. 1

Do you have trouble indexing those articles since you’re writing them with pure HTML? I’m doing the same thing with a few apps and having some indexing issues.

        1. 1

What do you with pure HTML? Do you mean client-side rendered? In my case, everything is server-side rendered, so it should be perfect for search engines.

However, I do see that my articles aren't currently indexed. I guess Google isn't crawling the site enough, I'll try submitting a Sitemap :)

          1. 1

Register your site on Google Search Console https://search.google.com/

            1. 1

I've had the site registered there for a while and I've also submitted my sitemap but Google is still not indexing several pages of mine. Strange!

  6. 1

you should use a social listening tool for finding leads. All this idea is very fruitful i will definitely try them for myself on my https://decortrendy.com/
project The main benefit is that you have Reddit and HN for the working and communication Thanks very much.

  7. 1

Well , I should suggest that you can use social media tools and platforms to grow your network and markleting , Reddit is no doubt very useful for creation and generating the Leads but other platforms and tools can give you the major boost and can grow the network and sales and efforts.Have anice day and thanks me later.

  8. 1

I love your approach towards building in public. It's like we're all your boss here and you're reporting about your outputs. This is lovely!

    1. 1

Haha I'm glad you're getting some pleasure out of my struggles ;D

  9. 1

Hi Macks, you really did a great job! Yes, it really inquire a lot of time while prospecting people manually, and socials are pretty crowded like in a real jungle :D. I always remember the one thought I learnt from my marketing proffesor: if you have limited budget, first you need to experiment with few channels to check the traction and than invest all your time in just one.

I'm curious to ask how can you submit new tool on AlternativeTo?

    1. 1

Yeah it's tough playing the marketing game, thanks for the encouragement! :)

You can submit tools to AlternativeTo yourself here:

      https://share.cleanshot.com/n8YNJ50d

You have to be logged in though for the "suggest alternative" button to be enabled!

      1. 2

We all need it :) Thanks for the detailed steps, very kind of you!

        1. 1

          No problem!

  10. 1

Smart, I like the idea of translating your post instead of writing a new one.

  11. 1

Am I the only one who cannot access this link in the post?
    https://www.notion.so/Don-t-use-Word-to-write-invoices-for-your-freelance-business-834f4619f09b4af7ae6f6c6f2b69ed2e

I registered and tried again and got this message:
"You do not have access to Max' Workspace. Please contact an admin to add you as a member."'

    1. 1

Oops! I linked the wrong thing, sorry. This is the correct link: https://cakedesk.app/articles/invoices-word

  12. 1

Glad to hear that the Reddit posts are working!

AlternativeTo also works well for us. Curious if there is a list of similar directory sites somewhere.

  13. 1

You're an inspiration, man. Please keep posting!

I've also just entered my second marketing week and would love to trade notes at some point!

    1. 1

Thanks man! I plan to keep posting and I'm happy to trade notes! You can find my Twitter and email in my profile :)

  14. 1

I’m in the same boat as you. Just finished week 1 of marketing - it’s a total grind.

I’m spending >4 hours a day trying to get the word out through social. But, I did generate 3 sales through Tik tok so totally worth it :)

    1. 1

Awesome, congrats on the sales! Are you doing anything else on TikTok, apart from publishing the videos?

And yeah this whole marketing thing is a lot of work! But I guess as we get better and more practiced, it will go easier!

      1. 1

Thanks! Right now I make 2 posts a day on Tik Tok and insta. I have 3 TT burner accounts that I use to try and hype up my videos with comments and reposts (not sure if it works tbh, but at a minimum I get 4 free likes).

I follow a ton of people. I go to my followers, pick one, go to their follower list and follow the top 20 or so. Repeat this a few time throughout the day. I get about a 30% followback rate. We will hit 1000 followers in about 12 of posting. (Unfollow those who don't follow back after a few days)

I send some sort of "Hello!" message to every new follower. No idea if this helps but I think it helps make a connection with my followers.

I reply to every comment on my videos, and like all of them.

Then the last thing I do is scroll through my "for you" feed and like and comment on every video I can. The funnier the better.

        1. 1

Oh wow, that is way more than I'm doing. I just post the videos at the moment.

I should try this, thanks for sharing such actionable details! 🤓

  15. 1

Thanks for this documentation! Feeling a bit like you. Released my app and now I try every marketing channel to get users and a feedback!

    1. 2

Cool! What marketing channels have you tried so far?

      1. 1

I have worked most with Facebook groups, TikTok, Instagram and reddit! But I must mention that I thought it will be easier. On Reddit every post from me will be deleted for spam or advertising. Its very hard...

        1. 2

Yeah, Reddit is tricky! Some subreddits have very strict no-self-promo rules. Others tolerate it. I always found it helpful to write a personalized post/comment to the subreddit when promoting my own product.

Also, asking for feedback on Reddit has worked well for me in the past (instead of just asking them download an app for example).

Btw for your landing page, it's hard to see at first glance that it's an app that lets you plan a trip. I have to read the description to come to this knowledge. Maybe a screenshot of the app (with device frame) would be helpful in communicating that

          1. 1

            Thanks for the advice!!

  16. 1

You forgot to add some hashtags for your tiktok video, would've definitely helped. Right now, literally everyone sees your video. It may be someone that isn't interested in freelancing (95% of people). Use a hashtag like #freelance to get a better audience for your video.

    1. 1

That's weird because I did add hashtags at the end of the description. Did I do something wrong?

      1. 2

Oh I didn't see it, my bad. I don't know why it didn't work for you, I guess you need some luck.

        1. 1

No worries! At least it's pretty fun to learn more about video editing and all that :)

Did you do anything else to boost your videos on TikTok other than just publishing them?

January 6, 2023 Had my first "marketing week" – here's what I did and what happened

I launched the paid version of Cakedesk (an invoicing app for freelancers) about three weeks ago and I've been having a hard time getting traffic from prospective users/customers. It's also not surprising because I've been doing a little bit of building in public on Twitter, but not much else.

This week I had some extra time on my hands and decided to try a few things to get the word out for Cakedesk.

Monday, Jan 2

I noticed that a lot of people share really beautiful invoice templates on Figma and so I decided to port some of those templates so they can be used with my app.

The first template I ported was called Ira. I put in a lot of effort, making sure that all the details in spacing and font sizes are converted accurately.

I then uploaded the template for download and left a comment on the Figma community file:

I also posted the template on Twitter, where it didn't get much attention.

Tuesday, Jan 3

I converted another Figma invoice template to Cakedesk and in the process built a little web app for converting pixels to centimeters.

This tool could long term maybe be a useful SEO piece and at the very least it will help users who are building their own invoice templates for Cakedesk.

The template I converted that day seemed to come from a designer with a fairly large Twitter following. So I posted it on Twitter and mentioned him, hoping to get his attention and maybe a retweet or something.

Nothing happened though :D

Wednesday, Jan 4

On Wednesday, I wanted to try posting about my app on Reddit. I know that most communities there don't like self-promotion, so I thought about another way:

I would ask users from relevant communities to share their custom invoice designs. My plan was to learn more about their process, what tools they use, what their invoices look like and then maybe reach out to them to ask for feedback about my app.

I had some good experiences marketing things to Reddit in the past, but this attempt failed completely.

One community spent their energy telling me how bad my own invoice template is instead of posting their own.

In another community it was speculated that my attempt to see their invoice designs could be some kind of a scam.

Although I was sad that in total only 1 person actually posted an invoice design, it was pretty funny to see the reaction on Reddit. I think next time I'll try to be more straight with them and ask directly for feedback on my product.

What I did learn though, is that there doesn't seem to be many people who have custom invoice designs because I also wasn't able to find posts of people showing them off on Reddit in general (as opposed to, say, portfolio websites).

Thursday, Jan 5

I posted a design for a potentially upcoming feature on Twitter, an overview screen:

The tweet didn't get much attention. I think I will still build the feature, because it's something truly useful and it will also look good on my landing page.

This day, the first visitor from Figma showed up on Cakedesk's website analytics, so I also posted a comment on the Rejiggle Figma community file that I had ported on Tuesday.

If the creator didn't see my tweet on Twitter, maybe some other people will at least find it on Figma. :)

Week in review

Overall, none of my marketing efforts this week did much.

I think this is part of the journey. I'm just going to keep trying things until I find a marketing channel where I can reliably get new users for my product.

For the future, I think the following things could help:

  • Directly reaching out to Twitter users who post about freelancing
  • Posting in Facebook groups (maybe even offering discount codes there or something)
  • Building features that make Cakedesk more marketable. E.g. building nicer-looking invoice templates that are bundled with the app and making it easy to customize those without having to use HTML/CSS

If anybody has some ideas on how I could improve my marketing efforts, I'd be happy to read from you in the comments!

Hope all you indie hackers have a great weekend!

Concluding that, after one week, your efforts didn't get you anything, is a bit premature. Depending on the industry, your efforts might take months to see any result. Yes, there might be that one person who went viral on some social network, but I would never bet on that.
Invoice generation is also a highly saturated market, so it might even take more time.

The “trick” is—and where many people quit—to push through.

Find the things people are searching for when in need of a product like Cakedesk. Can you create comparison pages with similar products (great for BoFu)? Are they looking for tips on how to get paid quicker? Do they want to know the most common mistakes for invoices (in country X)? Are there things they need to know before freelancing for companies in other countries than theirs?

    I could go on…

If you create these (short), but highly informative, articles, it's easy to point people to this article (instead of just pushing your product). And with a bit of patience, search engines might start picking it up.

    1. 1

Thanks for the encouraging words and the content suggestions. It's a good point that writing more content will allow me to directly link it to people instead of just waiting for search engines to pick it up. I have a long list of content ideas, I need to get started on that!

  2. 6

Firstly, thanks for sharing. It's helpful for the community to see their own mistakes in someone else's efforts. I can see things that I've done in what you've done, but for some reason, it's harder to see it in your own work. Maybe that's just me.

Here's some suggestions (not in any order):

    1. Add some hashtags to your tweets that are relevant to your audience. e.g. #freelancing #smallbusiness or even #buildinpublic.

    2. Add some colour into your product shots to make them stand out - almost everything is grey, with some occasional soft-pink.

    3. You need to talk about Benefits, not just the features. How much time will this save a freelancer? How much are they currently spending using other tools? How are your customers using your app? Convince your audience that they need your app.

    4. Consider offering a discount to specific communities to help validate the idea and generate testimonials. Why not offer all IH'ers a discount?

    5. Leverage sites like Product Hunt, Beta List etc... to get some early users

    6. Don't build any new features until you've nailed the marketing. Sell what you've got and let your customers help drive new feature development.

Lastly, don't give up! You're doing a great job posting regularly. Keep trying different channels like Facebook (as you mentioned) but also try answering questions on Quora.

    1. 1

Thank you, those are helpful suggestions! I'd be happy to give indie hackers a discount but I don't think my target customer is here, so I rather not be promoting here. (If anybody reads this and would like a discount, feel free to reach out though)

I need to get better at talking about the benefits, I will work on that. I'll try some more hashtags and you're probably right that I should lean into the marketing more before adding new features. Quora is also an interesting suggestion, I'll need to look into that :)

  3. 4

I admire what you did here. Keep trying more.

    1. 1

      Thank you!

  4. 2

Thank you, a very interesting write-up!

I must say that Reddit users can be weird that way. You will need to fund the right combination of a friendlier subreddit and the message itself. It will take some time.

Also on Twitter, you need a more significant following to get immediate results. If you have under 1K followers do not expect more than just a few engagements.

Marketing is a process, it is a good start, and do not give up, the results will accumulate.

    1. 1

Thanks phprunner, I appreciate the encouragement and I'm glad you found the post interesting!

  5. 2

Thinking about freelancers, I assume you can find your audience through LinkedIn as well. There are many ways for experiments. Watch this video by Judi Fox from Social Examiner channel, she's awesome: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PnmA3tWKlaA

And yes, please keep regularly posting. It's great to learn from your experience!

    1. 1

Wow, what a great video, thanks for linking this! I'll definitely explore LinkedIn!

  6. 2

Some people might not be happy about you taking their designs and monetising them, especially without some kind of attribution. I'd be a bit careful about doing that and maybe ask for permission before doing so.

    1. 1

You're right, I took care to attribute the original creation everywhere where I linked the ported templates and they are not bundled with the app. The license under which the designs are published on Figma allows me to use them for commercial purposes so I think I'm in the green 🤔

  7. 2

    Hey Macks,

Unfortunately, as you've noticed, marketing isn't quite the same as building.

It's not do X and Y will be guaranteed to happen. You're dealing with human beings and we're a notoriously difficult thing to understand and manage ;-)

You've just got to keep on plugging forward.

However, that being said, there are plenty of things you can do to increase the chances of your marketing working.

I've just posted an article today about a strategy that worked for me on Twitter for example - https://www.indiehackers.com/post/steal-the-tweet-that-made-me-4-figures-in-revenue-with-less-than-100-followers-on-twitter-cd1b6afe0b

Read it and apply it to your business - it won't guarantee success as I mentioned but it dramatically increases your chances.

    Hope that helps

    Best

    Chris

    1. 1

Hi Chris, interesting article. Actually a good idea to reply to tweets more influential people, I’ll give it a try. Thanks!

      1. 1

No problem, you're very welcome :-)

Could I ask you post that reply under the article itself and give the article a like? It'll help get it more visibility and help others on this forum as well

        Best

        Chris

  8. 1

Congrats on the Product Hunt launch! Trust it has been rewarding so far!?

    1. 1

Thanks! It's been alright, not too exciting actually. I'll write up what happened on my weekly post on Friday :)

To make an arch, all you need to do is blow up balloons and tie them together in knots. The balloons can be inflated with an air compressor or an electrical balloon pump, and then you can form them into an arch by tying them tightly together. It is simply a fantastic complement to a celebration or event that makes it appear elaborate and magnificent.
There are 3 distinct types of balloons. balloons made of chrome, metallic, and patele.

Thanks for sharing this. It’s really helpful for expectation management.

Regarding your thought about “Building features that make Cakedesk more marketable. E.g. building nicer-looking invoice templates that…” I think that this is focused on the wrong part of the funnel. This might help a customer that’s already spent a lot of time learning about your project, but your deficiency right now is much higher up in your funnel. Focusing on adding yet-another feature will just slow you down and distract you from generating more traffic.

    1. 2

Hi ChessSpyder, I think you're right. It's easy for me to deceive myself that "I just need this one more feature". I need to focus on getting the traffic!

  15. 1

I think you should try more on Reddit with different messages in different communities.

    1. 2

Yeah, I'll keep exploring Reddit for sure, has helped me get users for other projects in the past. Where are you guys promoting Saga btw?

      1. 1

It started with Reddit and Twitter, then we shifted to a private community on Discord and growing the email list. Now we are focusing more on SEO, it's completely untapped for us.

        1. 2

That's exciting! You're also in a tough market it seems, with so many large competitors like Notion and Obsidian. Would you mind sharing what kind of posts/comments you were making on Reddit?

          1. 1

It's competitive but I think the whole market for collaborative software is heading in that direction (vs the current status quo of sharepoint or google workspace in larger orgs).

Here are some examples. I think it's important to think about the use case of the product for the particular community and if the community can benefit from it. Having a video also helps.

            1. 2

Thanks for sharing, that's really helpful. Interesting how your post in 3 other DND communities didn't get much love and it blew up in one of them, that's awesome and encouraging.

Probably I can go into various types of communities and post how my app can help them create proposals. For example, how photographers create proposals in Cakedesk. Same for writers, designers, developers.

For Saga, I think you could have a use case for game developers writing game design documents as well. I posted a markdown-based note taking app on /r/gamedev a long time ago and it was pretty well received at the time.

              1. 1

Thanks for the suggestion! I'll try it out this week! Game developers could also benefit from connected ideas/topics in their docs.

Thanks for sharing. It's nice to see that someone else is struggling with marketing too! Seems like marketing is something that you've got to keep at, and eventually you get some results!

  17. 1

Market it to marketers who sell courses about side business and offer a promotion to their following. They have students that are starting and who have not invoicing in place yet. They have podcasts where they interview people. I'm thinking about Amy Porterfield and her peers. She has a book that will be launched soon. What is the usp of Cakedesk ? Why would people switch ? Is it effortless ? Maybe join this kind of course, they usually come with a community. I would also create an entry in alternativeto.net . It's a software directory where people who know one software can find alternatives.

    1. 1

Also you say that your tool is using html and css. Did you thought about svg ? This may help designer do more interesting layout where everything is not square. I would also think about an invoice template marketplace or an offer specific to designers to put your tool in their hand. If I had a business that need invoicing tool, I would like beautifull templates ready to use. I wouldn't have time to come up with my own design. I may have a need for customisation but not start from scratch.

      1. 1

Thanks for the great suggestions Roland! I never considered adding my own product to alternativeto.net, I don't know why!

Cakedesk actually has all the capabilities to support user-generated templates. I think it would be really cool if design agencies created awesome-looking invoice templates for their clients and got them to use Cakedesk. This is something that I've had in mind for a while but I need to find agencies that create invoice designs for clients. Thanks for bringing this back to my attention, should explore that soon! :)

Thanks for the write-up, usually the first weeks are the slowest

    1. 1

Thanks, that's good to know! PixCap looks awesome btw!

  19. 1

It is not that the efforts were for nothing, the efforts are for figuring out how to improve the next effort and where to put the focus.

The strategy looks good, you can continue in this way and maybe keep looking carefully for more specific forums or sites for creating invoice templates.

However, I think it is more important how you communicate your service than the service itself, let me explain...

It is true that the service you are going to offer must stand out from the crowd, so if you have at least one aspect that allows you to stand out...fine, otherwise I would advise you to think about how you could make your service better than others.

After that the important thing is communication, I would say be more direct in asking for feedback openly.

My comments are only advice and I cannot assure you of their effectiveness and usefulness for your specific case, but they are more or less general advice.

    1. 2

      Thanks for your thoughts!

I would love to get more feedback from (prospective) users.

      • I can find a way to ask for feedback inside the app without it being annoying
      • For prospective users, I should ask directly for feedback when posting the app somewhere or when reaching out to potential users directly
  20. 1

Keep trying the process, and adjust the tactics a little bit. and maybe you can use the paid promotion.

    Good luck!

    1. 1

Thanks! I want to try paid ads ad some point for sure but for now gonna keep exploring free opportunities :)

I liked your site and intro video just wanted to suggest you if you can implement or provide a free invoice generator similar to wise.com. Which might help you in acquiring some users.

    1. 1

Thanks! You're right, an online invoice generator could be a good way to get some relevant traffic!

Hey, around a month ago I created a web app that allows people to make map charts. I'd like to give you a little bit of advice. I was able to spread my app and now get around 300 users per day, and I think you can too.

The only social media I posted about my app on was TikTok. Not Twitter, not Reddit, only TikTok. The thing is that TikTok is the easiest platform to get viral on. To make it easier for beginners, the algorithm pushes out your first videos on the fyp (for you page, like feed in Twitter). That's why one of my videos got 239k views, which is a lot. The sad part is that the videos you make around 3 weeks after the beginning of your account will only be getting around 2500 views. It's still a lot, but not as good as when you beginned.

I have to say that I got rather lucky that there was a whole community on TikTok that made maps and posted them on the platform. Most of my users/viewers are them. Hopefully there's a community of freelancers on TikTok that will need an app like Cakedesk, but even if there isn't, I think you should still try. Good luck!

    1. 1

Wow that's amazing! I also had a friend who had great success on TikTok, I should really consider it. Any chance I could see the videos you've created for your app? Thanks for the suggestion!

      1. 1

Yes, my username is @periphern, should come up if you just google it. The videos aren't at all professional yet they received a lot of attention anyway. It's very easy.

        1. 1

Awesome, thanks for sharing. It really is very interesting, I'll be studying your TikTok channel a bit 🤓

These sites are typically used by consumers to save money on purchases, and by companies to drive traffic to their websites and increase sales. Coupon code submission sites often have searchable databases that allow users to quickly find and apply discounts for the products and services they are interested in. Additionally, many sites offer reviews, ratings, and other helpful information to help customers make informed decisions.

December 15, 2022 Making my first sales today, after over 1 year of development

Today I finally launched the paid version of Cakedesk, which I've been working on for over 1 year.

I'm promoting it on Twitter and LinkedIn with a 40% discount. And to my small list of early access users.

So far all my sales are to existing users and it's a great feeling to see that they are willing to buy the app after using it for a while.

But with the 40% discount I was hoping to actually reach a few new people who haven't been using my app yet.

Is there anything I should do with my landing page to better sell to "cold" users? Helpful for any feedback!

    Hi Macks,

Congratulations on your first sales! Well done for sticking with the hard work to reach this point.

I think the landing page of your site is fine, but it feels a bit dry. I appreciate you are working with an accounting application, and that is a dry area (I know because I used to work in it!). But, people like to see people, not invoices. So if it were my choice, I’d add some extra interest to the home page perhaps by using some relevant-looking images from Unsplash or iStock.

Better still, if you could create some case studies of how your early access users have benefitted from your product, featuring a photograph of their smiling faces, that would be a perfect persuader.

If the early users prefer not to provide a photograph, you could still do some case studies, with testimonials from them.

    Good luck!

Hi @QSLIndie, thanks a lot for the feedback!

I think you have a good point. Testimonials with some human faces would definitely help to make Cakedesk feel a bit more personal/real. I already started collecting some :)

Congratulations on your sales! I like the landing page and the product, one thing that would help it pop even more would be to swap the static screenshots you have on the site with little repeating videos that show you the process. I understand you have the explanation video in the header (nicely done by the way) but like my father used to say: "Ain't nobody got time fo' dat".

Thanks @jonigiuro, that's a good idea! I know that these GIFs that show off the magic moments of an app do always work with me!

September 27, 2022 Created a demo-video for Cakedesk

I've been working on this app for some time and I've gotten a lot of helpful feedback from early access participants.

I'm hoping to attract more users by showing off what it's like to use Cakedesk.

View the video here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wv6ZoUx6_b8

Also I really like making YouTube videos but it's a lot of work! These 2 minutes took me almost 6 hours to make.

Let me know your thoughts! Is there anything I could do better?

July 29, 2022 Hired a 3D graphics designer to help create the macOS app icon

Cakedesk is a desktop application for freelancers with which they can create invoices and proposals, as well as manage their clients.

It's super important that the app feels at home and so I wanted a macOS Big Sur-like icon with a fancy 3D model.

I'm really happy with the final result, so I wrote a little blog post about the process.

Some things I did not share in the blog:

  • It cost me 500€ to commission this 3D cake render
  • The design brief that I created for my designer
