CalcFlow
10 free financial calculators targeting 77K monthly searches
I spent last weekend building CalcFlow - a portfolio of free financial calculators designed to generate passive income through SEO.
## The Model
Free tools → SEO traffic → AdSense + Affiliates = Passive income
Total investment: $2.98 (domain)
Time investment: over couple weekends
## What I Built
10 calculators targeting different financial pain points:
1. Solar ROI Calculator - 1,900 searches/month
2. 1031 Exchange Tax Calculator - 5,000 searches/month
3. Commercial Real Estate Calculator - 23,000 searches/month ⭐
4. Capital Gains Tax Calculator - 12,000 searches/month
5. Mortgage Refinance Calculator - 8,500 searches/month
6. IRMAA Calculator - 3,400 searches/month (blue ocean!)
7. Home Affordability Calculator - 6,000 searches/month
8. Rental Property ROI Calculator - 4,200 searches/month
9. Car Loan Calculator - 8,000 searches/month
10. 401(k) Calculator - 5,000 searches/month
Total: 77,000 monthly searches targeted
## Tech Stack
- React + TypeScript
- Tailwind CSS
- Supabase (state tax rates)
- Free hosting on Readdy
- Domain via Namecheap ($2.98/year)
No authentication, no backend (except tax rate lookups), no payment processing. Just pure calculators.
## First 28 Days Results (Pre-SEO)
- 112 active users (from ProductHunt only)
- 829 events
- 7.4 events per user - people actually using them!
- Top performer: Solar ROI (73% of traffic)
- Best engagement: Capital Gains calculator (12.5% bounce rate)
## Monetization Strategy
Phase 1 (Month 1-3): Google AdSense only
→ Target: $50-200/month
Phase 2 (Month 3-6): Add contextual affiliates
→ TurboTax on tax calculators, mortgage lenders on refinance tool
→ Target: $500-1,500/month
Phase 3 (Month 6-12): Lead generation
→ Sell qualified leads to financial advisors, solar installers
→ Target: $2,000-5,000/month
Phase 4 (Month 12+): Direct partnerships
→ Sponsorships, white-label licensing
→ Target: $5,000-15,000/month
## What I Learned
✅ What Worked:
- Portfolio approach - 10 calculators = 10 independent traffic sources
- High-intent keywords - "1031 exchange calculator" = investor actively making decisions
- No login wall - Removes friction, better for SEO
- Mobile-first design - 60%+ of searches are mobile
- Deep SEO content - 1,500+ words per calculator explaining concepts
❌ What I'd Do Differently:
- Should've verified Search Console Day 1 (not Day 28)
- Built calculator #11-15 instead of perfecting #1-10
- More user testing before launch
- Started affiliate research earlier
## The Blue Ocean Discovery
IRMAA Calculator - Medicare Part B/D surcharge calculator. Gets 3,400 monthly searches but almost no quality calculators exist online. It's a small niche, but completely uncontested.
Sometimes the best opportunities aren't the biggest ones.
## Current Status
- ✅ 10 calculators live
- ✅ Google Search Console submitted
- ✅ Google AdSense installed (pending approval)
- 🔄 Waiting for SEO to kick in (Month 2-3)
- 📊 4 users/day organic (pre-optimization)
## The Strategy Moving Forward
Month 1: Let SEO marinate, monitor performance
Month 2: Identify winning calculators, build 2-3 more in same categories
Month 3: Add affiliate programs to top performers
Month 6: Scale winning categories, explore lead gen
## Why This Could Actually Work
1. Real search volume - Not theoretical, actual monthly searches
2. High-intent traffic - Someone searching for a 1031 calculator is investing NOW
3. Compound growth - Each calculator ranks independently
4. Low maintenance - No customer support, minimal hosting costs
5. Multiple revenue streams - Not dependent on one monetization channel
## The Anti-SaaS Thesis
Instead of building one elaborate platform with user accounts, dashboards, and subscriptions, I built 10 simple tools that:
- Rank for different keywords
- Monetize independently
- Require no ongoing support
- Scale without infrastructure costs
Lower effort per user, but way more users.
## Questions I'm Happy to Answer
- Technical implementation
- SEO content strategy
- Specific calculator logic
- Monetization approach
- Time breakdown per calculator

About
I kept needing financial calculators for my own decisions and couldn't find good free versions. Everything was either too simple, behind paywalls, or covered in ads. So I built a portfolio of 10 calculators.
