Candl
The non-social book-tracking webapp
It's been more than a month since I've launched a paid subscription plan, and now I finally have my first customer.
It's really hard to analyze what I did to make this happen. It's just 1 customer so that easily can be a coincidence, but I did some improvements just a couple days before:
- A more appealing and clean visual design of the upgrade page
- Changed the language: "Plus plan" => "Avid Reader", "Subscribe now" => "Join the club"
- More features listed (I added "early access to new features", "no ads", "priority assistance")
- Added "Avid Reader" link to the menu area, where it can't be missed
Anyways, the step "from zero to one" taken, hoping to get more paid customers soon.
Candl is 3 years old, and so far I wasn't able to monetize it despite about 100 unique daily users. Recently I decided to introduce a paid subscription plan ($9 / mo) with several extra features like:
- Ability to add custom statuses (say, "Abandoned" or "Paused")
- Custom UI themes
- Better tooling for notes, ability to publish online
I will need to think about more features to add here.
Still not quite sure what this will lead me, but we'll see 🤞

Congrats! One thing I notice on your landing page in wide screen is some the contents is full width which does not look that good in my opinion, for wide screen a fixed width is much better I think.
Oh yeah, good point. I will need to rethink the landing page anyways soon
Congrats, I got a paid customer recently as well.
Congrats to you!
