June 15, 2025 I Built a Free Capsule Wardrobe Tool with Firebase Studio (and a Lot of Vibes)

Hey Indie Hackers 👋

A few weeks ago, I launched Capsule Creator, a totally free tool that lets you design your own capsule wardrobe.

No signups. No paywalls. Just upload your clothes, mix & match outfits, save them, and browse some community presets.

But here’s the twist:

I built the whole thing with Firebase Studio and... it kind of worked. With vibes. And chaos. 😅

The Stack (aka Me + AI Coding at 2AM)

Capsule Creator started as a side project for GenOutfit, my main fashion AI SaaS. I wanted something frictionless, something you could open and just use without creating an account.

So I spun up an MVP using:

  • Next.js 15 (App Router)

  • Firebase Studio

  • Cloudflare R2 to host the images

  • Tailwind + ShadCN/UI for fast, decent-looking components

Firebase Studio was like pair programming with an overeager intern, sometimes brilliant, sometimes "wait... what did you just do?"

It could scaffold routes and pages with one prompt. But when stuff broke (and it did), I'd end up pasting code into Gemini to untangle the mess.

What Went Wrong (and What Didn’t)

The frustrating stuff:

  • React bindings blew up with Webpack vs Turbopack, still not 100% sure why

  • next/image threw weird "url param not allowed" errors

  • Firebase Studio sometimes hallucinated props or duplicated logic

The wins:

  • Got from idea to working demo fast

  • Being 100% free

  • No login = surprisingly powerful UX decision

  • A fully working application that I built without writing a single line of code.

Why I Made This

Capsule wardrobes are cool in theory, but hard to plan.

I wanted to fix that.

  • Let people upload their actual clothes

  • See how outfits look together

  • Save them

  • Get inspired by other people's setups

And yeah, this is also a soft lead-gen tool for GenOutfit, but more importantly, I wanted to create something genuinely useful, not just a gimmick

Give value first. Then gently guide the right people toward the paid product.

What I Learned (as a solo builder with an AI sidekick)

  1. AI IDEs are great starters, not finishers, you still need to review

  2. PRDs help. Even messy ones. I used ChatGPT to scope features more clearly

  3. Debugging with AI works best when you’re very specific (“fix line 28 error on file X” not “why does this crash”)

  4. Lock down your .env files early. I caught mine just before pushing 😬

  5. “No signup required” is the right move (I hope so 😬 😬)
