Embroidered cotton caps based on generative design
After a few sales I thought it was time to came up with something new for the brand. I wanted to come up with something that would be fun to make but also fun for people to play with, a cap generator seemed like the right feature.
My idea was that people like to own something unique, especially when you talk about streetwear and fashion. The code I wrote last summer can generate random signature as long as you let it run.
Not all of the signatures are pleasant for the eye but once you have found one you like, you can then choose a shape and color of your cap!
It was a very interesting feature to develop and so far, people are having fun generating their signature!
After spending a crazy amount of time on product photography (getting some clean and professional shots of the caps was without a doubt the hardest part of the project so far), I started building an online store. Having a background in Computer Science, it was a rather fun task for me (and I've had always wanted to tried out Stripe). I had a good time designing the website and writting the content of if.

I tried to interact as much as possible with my Instagram audience, posting stories and so on. One morning, one of my follower asked if the caps were for sale and I made my first sale!
We talked for a while and he promised to send me pictures as soon as he get the cap. It was a great way to create content for the account!

I wanted to see my potential customers would react to my products has soon as possible. To be honest, most of my plan to build an audience was to hold give away on Instagram. Not very original but everyone like free stuff. I ended up holding four contests, giving around a dozen of caps and building an audience of almost 100 persons.
It was pretty great to see the people reactions to the designs and it motivated me to go further.

Hello, I saw that you closed your shop. How did it end up with your give away ? Did you manage to convert some of your new followers in to customers ?
Thanks for your thoughts.-

Hello, thanks for your interest! The shop wasn't closed, I just had some DNS issues but everything is back to normal now. To answer your question, considering caps are not really a recurring purchase, the give away help me to increase my follower count on social media but not my customers.
However I launched a new module to let people customize their own cap and this time it converted more followers in to customers!

I started experimenting various designs, I have always been fascinated by generative design so I wrote an algorithm to generate geometric signatures. Each signature was randomly generated and manually refined. I tried to make each of them algorithmically nice. After a few days of work, I ended up with five products and a strategy to build an audience. I also reached out some potential suppliers to settle the operational details.

I was seeking a new cap for the summer and talking with friends about streetwear and clothing lines in general got me curious on how to handle a full creative process. I started looking online for for new models but beeing unsatisfied with was I had found, I decided to design my own.

Last summer I have set myself an objective to build (and ship!) something from scratch. An ecommerce website was a great challenge involving lot of stimulating skills (code, product photography, marketing)
