Charades Generator
Random party game word generator for Charades, Imposter Game
Hey Indie Hackers! ๐
I wanted to share a milestone and the backstory behind my side project, Charades Generator โ a clean, instant word generator for party games like Charades, Pictionary, Truth or Dare, and our new real-time Imposter Game.
Here is a look at why I built it, the tech stack, our growth strategy, and how we got monetized.
๐ก The Backstory: Why Build Another Game Generator?
During game nights with friends and family, we often found ourselves scrambling to come up with fresh, clean, and fun charades prompts. Existing sites were either cluttered with intrusive ads, horribly unoptimized for mobile, or lacked tailored category filtering (e.g., kids-friendly vs adult humor, Disney, Movies, etc.).
I set out to build Charades Generator as a clean, lightning-fast, zero-friction web app that anyone can launch on their phone in seconds.
๐ ๏ธ Tech Stack & Key Features
Framework: Next.js 15 (App Router) + TypeScript
Styling: Tailwind CSS (fast, mobile-first design)
Internationalization (i18n): Native localization in 5 languages (English, Spanish, French, Portuguese, Japanese)
Real-Time Multiplayer: Powered by Pusher for the Imposter Game (players join via QR code/room code on their phones)
Database: 2,000+ curated prompts across 15+ categories (Disney, Movies, Kids, Animals, Funny, Bible, Holiday, etc.)
๐ Growth & Programmatic SEO Strategy
Rather than fighting solely for the ultra-competitive head keywords, I focused on a multi-pronged programmatic SEO approach:
1. Vertical Long-Tail Matrix: Dedicated pages for specific intent, e.g., /charades-generator-for-kids, /disney-charades-generator, /christmas-charades-generator.
2. Horizontal Expansion: Expanding into related high-volume party games like Pictionary, Would You Rather, and Truth or Dare.
3. High User Dwell Time: Built-in scenario presets, custom word pickers, and card generators pushed average user time-on-page to ~90 seconds.
4. Targeted Demographics: 85%+ of our organic search traffic comes from Tier 1 English-speaking countries (US, UK, AU, CA), consisting of parents, teachers, and party hosts.
๐ฐ Monetization Milestone
We recently hit a major milestone: getting accepted and mounted on Journey by Mediavine!
Traffic: Scaling to ~10,000+ monthly sessions (with 85%+ coming from Tier 1 English-speaking countries).
Ad Performance: Currently ramping up nicely in the initial advertiser bidding/learning phase. We are seeing very encouraging RPM and CPM metrics, and we are preparing for the upcoming Q4 holiday traffic surge (Halloween, Thanksgiving & Christmas).
๐ฎ Whatโs Next?
Expanding the word bank to 5,000+ prompts.
Optimizing printable PDF downloads for teachers and mom bloggers.
Scaling Pinterest outreach for party planners.
I'd love to get feedback from the IH community! If you're building niche SEO tools or utility apps, how do you approach Q4 seasonality?

The strongest part is the distribution model, not the game itself. 10k+ monthly sessions with 85%+ Tier 1 traffic proves the long-tail SEO approach is working; the next question is how far that model can expand without diluting search intent.
