AI chatbots & character chats for roleplay & gaming

July 8, 2026 We created a Character AI alternative for Roleplay and Gaming

Hey guys,

I built ChatBrat because Character AI's memory was inconsistent as hell and most alternatives either felt shallow or required you to set up your own backend like SillyTavern.

I wanted the complexity and power of SillyTavern, things like strong persistent memory, multi-NPC interactions, lorebooks, and actual story game mechanics but without the setup hell. No installs, no API keys, no running your own backend.

So I made ChatBrat: a free browser-based platform for AI roleplay and character chats that gives you real depth without forcing you to become a dev just to use it. You can build characters, scenarios, and full worlds, run proper multi-character roleplay and story games, and have everything actually remember what’s going on.

It’s basically trying to take the good parts of both Character.AI and SillyTavern and combine them into something that doesn’t suck to use.

It’s live at chatbrat.ai. I’ve been using it for ongoing character roleplay and it’s been holding up way better than most options I’ve tried.

If you’re looking for a Character AI or Sillytavern alternative that actually has some complexity and depth for roleplay and gaming, check it out and tell me what you think.

Would love any honest feedback.

What stood out to me is that you're removing setup friction rather than just adding features.

A lot of products compete on capability. If people can get 90% of the depth with 10% of the effort, that's often a stronger advantage than having the most advanced feature set.

I built ChatBrat because Character.AI’s memory was too inconsistent to ever feel like a real companion or game. One day it remembered everything, the next it forgot the plot
