April 20, 2022 Moved to a subscription model

Why?

It's a lot of work building and maintaining an app like this, especially keeping it relevant and working with new iOS releases. I used to be very against app subscriptions until I realised it was the only way for my app to exist longer than a few months.

Larger apps, with large teams behind them, actually set the expectation of fairly low prices for apps, because they have the user base to do so. For indie devs to survive, we rely on fewer customers, and if an app can't financially support itself, it won't exist anymore.

Some of the backlash I've gotten is the high price of the lifetime unlock. The reason the lifetime unlock seems high, is because it has to cover years of use and upgrades. Three years from now, the app will still need to sync, function and keep up to date with iOS.

With me providing support, fixing bugs and helping users all that time.

We need more innovative apps, supporting indie developers is one way to do so.

November 22, 2021 Launched Checklist Groups

Just finished submitting my new build to the app store. This new version includes the ability to put checklists into groups plus a bunch of bug fixes. I completely underestimated the complexity of groups and reordering within then so it took me a few months longer then planned!

September 13, 2021 Launched on Product Hunt

I submitted my app to Product Hunt: https://www.producthunt.com/posts/checkyourlist

It went ok, not as well as I had hoped. I did not do much prep work and I think I underestimated how difficult it can be to compete with other products with planned launches are large lists. It got buried too quickly. Where posts on Hacker News/Reddit etc have been well received, but the competition is different for upvotes there.

July 30, 2021 #2 on Hacker News

I submitted my app a few days ago to Show Hacker News. I was trying to get some feedback and did not expect much of a result. I was extremely surprised to find the post getting to #2 on the home page.

https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=27871790

I've had alot of positive feedback and feature requests via comments and email now :)

So far the post has resulted in:

  • 6300 visitors to CheckyourList.app
  • 1100 app installs
  • 56 in-app purchases which is $277 in sales (up to the 19th)
  • 50 email subscribers

July 18, 2021 First two sales :D

In the last week I got the first two in-app purchases, this is from just listing it in the app store. One from Iceland and one from Saudi Arabia surprisingly.

I'm going to be doing some more focused marketing soon, I'm happy that the app is bug free enough now after a lot of testing :)

June 30, 2021 MVP Launched

I launched the MVP today! I was able to build it in under about two months, however I spent around 3-4 days a week on this. I am lucky that I was able to scrape together as much time as I can. I'm happy to say this is now not one of those projects that I never launched!

May 21, 2021 Came up with idea

Hi, I'm Spencer and I have ADHD. I found myself forgetting things more and more after the birth of my son. Dropping him at daycare and then going to the gym, required so many things. I felt overwhelmed and would take ages to leave the house as I searched around looking for what I needed. I wanted a solution, so I came up with the idea for this app.
