April 29, 2019 How to validate an idea? (i.g. when to MVP)

We are firm believers of validation before any execution.
That means before you build, polish and market a product - you first need to test the market.

How do we do that?

  • Landing Page
  • Product Launches
  • Advertising
  • Time

Landing Page

We use Unicorn Platform to build beautiful landing pages (and websites) that are simple, responsive and fast!

Build a simple layout with Unicorn's built-in components, keep it simple to outline your message and unique value proposition.

The landing page should contain:

  • Product description one (or two) liner
  • How it works
  • Pricing
  • Signup form (usually just an email)

Connect the landing page to Google Spreadsheet, Airtable or something similar to collect all leads into a nice list.

Measure everything you can on the page, use tools like:

  • Google Tag Manager (to add the rest)
  • Google Analytics (just generic analytics, useless otherwise)
  • Mixpanel to build funnels and see top events and interaction
  • HotJar/CrazyEgg to see video recordings and heatmaps
  • Facebook pixel (you want to start collecting those audiences)
  • Google Ads conversions + remarketing
  • Other ad platform pixels
  • (Optional) chat widget like Drift, Tawk, Crisp, etc you might get a few productive chats with your potential customers.

Product Launches

ProductHunt, IndieHackers, HackerNews, etc

Are a great place to get some traction and feedback - keep in mind, many times you'll get hate comments (e.g. "this is useless") ignore those.
Additionally, don't expect too much from these services, even if you do manage to collect emails to your waitlist, this doesn't mean you're going to scale or get paying customers from those channels (not in the short term at least).

But all-in-all it can give you a good indication if you're on the right track.

Advertising

Google Ads - target your keywords using either "exact" or "phrase match", don't use broad terms - these will just waste your money.

Reddit Ads - this is similar to doing a product launch but on a bigger scale. Beware, Reddit Ads requires creating a post that engages users and promotes discussion - this is very hard to do right.

Facebook Ads - Big No No. Facebook is a money machine and you need quite a few dollars to find out your best target audiences and what works best. Otherwise it will just empty your wallet.
It works in high scale and when you have some audience built up.

Time

Give it 2-3 weeks, see if you can collect 100-150 leads.
If you did - congrats you got initial traction and you will probably be able to generate some revenue from this product, you should start building an MVP.

If not, well you validated that your idea is probably a product that nobody wants :-D

April 10, 2019 Why and When Are Users Churning?

We're two SaaS founders currently working on ProveSource.
Like any founders, we're always looking to improve our conversions, engagement, retention and the number #1 SaaS problem - churn!

We invest a lot in moving our users down the funnel and making them use and benefit from the product and many times when following up with users on their issues, or just checking up with them - we find out they removed our script from their website (even though there's a free version!).

And then it struck us, we know how many installed and on-boarded, but we never know who left/removed/uninstalled - we're sure there are tons of SaaS founders who struggle with the same issue.

So we built a small internal tool that helps us automate and reach out to those users who are churning... and that helped us recover around 22% of those who we found using a simple email automation - nice, closed feedback loop coupled with contextual customer service.

About

While working on ProveSource - a social proof platform for websites, we noticed we can find out when a user adds our script, BUT we never know when users are uninstalling/removing our script - ChurnKit is our answer.
