I recently launched Cloudia Chat, a native macOS AI assistant. I built it because most AI tools I used on Mac felt like expensive browser tabs, and I wanted something that feels more at home on macOS.
What it does:

The pricing experiment is the main thing Iโm testing right now.
Instead of only forcing a monthly subscription, I added:

A lot of AI tools are around $20/month, and Iโm curious whether Mac users prefer a native Mac app with flexible pricing instead.

Iโm not treating lifetime as โunlimited usage forever with no limits.โ The idea is to offer lifetime access with reasonable fair-use limits, while keeping the app sustainable through usage monitoring, optimized model routing, and careful control of higher-cost features like deep research, web search, and document/image analysis.

The goal is to keep it flexible: light users can choose weekly/monthly, regular users can pick yearly, and people who truly prefer paying once can go with lifetime access. For Mac users especially, I want Cloudia to feel like a proper native tool, not just another AI tab in the browser.

For an AI Mac app like Cloudia Chat, I think a small monthly fee makes more sense than lifetime access, mainly because AI usage has ongoing API and server costs.
As a user, Iโd prefer an affordable monthly plan with a free trial, so I can test the app first and only keep paying if it actually saves me time. Lifetime access is attractive, but only if it comes with fair usage limits.
For serious AI tools, monthly feels more sustainable and trustworthy.
