I've been running codewithhugo.com for close to 2 years.
My focus on writing to the point content for developers who want the solution to their problems without going to StackOverflow/GitHub issues/reading source code is paying off.

My posts are referenced as solutions in GitHub Issues for projects like Vue.js and Jest.

I've gone from scattergun topics and themes (necessary in order to build the writing habit) to methodical and focused posts centered around a topic. The latest of which culminates in an ebook now available for pre-order (45% off) jesthandbook.com.

You can see my focus on writing focused posts solving specific problems for developers who use Jest on the codewithhugo.com homepage.

Statistics for the site are public at https://simpleanalytics.com/codewithhugo.com?start=2019-10-29&end=2019-11-28.

Honestly more impressed that I lasted this long

I think I got just enough success, just often enough to stick with it

Amazing Google search results, do you think that is down to the very focused topics on each post?

      I think it's 2 things.

      1. I wrote the post I wish I had when learning about something.
      2. I write posts on topics that my other posts are getting search impressions for.

Can you explain more about point 2 please?

It's an SEO trick I picked up off Neil Patel.

You go into Google Search Console, isolate to a certain page on your site, and look at the search queries.

Now from here you should do 2 things:

          1. If the keywords are relevant for the page, you should optimise for them (update your meta description and/or title)
          2. If the keywords are not relevant for the page, create a new post for which those keywords would be relevant

The explanation is 2. Of this new list 😊

Fantastic, I must give this one a try.

Such a clever idea. No matter what, you're giving users the content they want :)

October 1, 2019 Reach 3 figures in ad revenue

September 2019 is the first month where ad revenue has passed $100 with $103.91. Registered impressions as per my publisher console were 51,990 that's a CPM of around $0.50.

This has come as a result of organic growth where I've gone from under 2k hits a day in April/May 2019 to over 3k (now close to 3.5k per day). Total pageviews this month were up to 82k, of which 70k (~85%) were organic (Google Search).

My weekly post cadence for months and identifying topic and keyword opportunities through the Google Search console has led to consistent growth.

Content that's started ranking quite high recently:

  • add days to a date in JavaScript
  • exclude line/file/statement from coverage in Jest

Other revenue:

  • MentorCruise: $80
  • Sequelize ES6 Cheatsheet: $14.97, 3 sales
  • Medium Partner Program: $3.68

Total this month: $202.56

    Nice work!

Would be interested to know a little more about how you've acquired the organic growth.

I write content that I wish I had found when searching for an issue. It comes out at a weekly cadence (I miss some weeks but it's definitely close to every week).

Especially if there isn't currently a blog post out there detailing it (ie. The answer is on StackOverflow, GitHub Issues or source code).

I also use themes and Google Search Console terms to find out which queries my pages rank for but don't actually answer and write that content.

September 30, 2019 Become a published author

I've been working on a chapter for "Professional JavaScript" since mid-August, it's now published, so I can officially say I'm co-author of "Professional JavaScript" with Packt.

My contribution was a chapter about functional programming in JavaScript. Which I tried my hardest to make about real-world patterns to illustrate functional programming.

It was an interesting experience collaborating on writing with the editors and reviewers. It has allowed me to take my technical writing to the next level, especially with regards to providing explanations, illustrative examples and sample output.
