I met up with a buddy who is the CTO of a rapidly growing startup last friday to see if he is having the same issues with DVCS I am and guess what…. It’s not just me!

His team is experiencing the same problems with DVCS (Distributed Version Control Systems) my team is. He also volunteered to be my first Beta customer when the product is ready to try!

With rapid growth comes the rapid onset of issues that teams and toolings are usually not prepared to handle.

By day, I’m the leader of an engineering team which has grown from 5 to around 50 engineers in the span of just under 3 years. With a small team of 5, branching models, code review standards, and branch protections are important, but there are plenty of small high performing teams without them. With a 50 person team, they are essential to ensure quality and stability throughout the codebase. From my experience these practices continuously evolve and improve as the team grows. Implementing these evolving practices over the 120+ repos (which number grows by the day) we have feels like a giant wrestling match between us and GitHub.
