Build faster without sacrificing code quality.

January 26, 2026 The problem that pushed me to build a Laravel code generator

Hey everyone 👋

I wanted to share a bit of context around a project I’ve been working on and get some honest feedback from other builders here.

Over the last few years, while working on PHP/Laravel side projects, I kept running into the same pattern: a lot of time spent wiring the same fundamentals over and over again — CRUD, authentication, validation, permissions, basic structure, etc.

Even with solid tooling available, I still often felt stuck between two extremes:

  • Moving fast by scaffolding everything quickly, but ending up with code I wasn’t happy to maintain

  • Or doing everything manually to keep things clean, but paying for it in time and momentum

So I started building Codexable as an experiment for myself.

The goal isn’t to hide complexity or generate magic code. It’s to help speed up the boring, repetitive parts while still generating readable, production-ready code that follows clean code and SOLID principles — code you’re expected to read, understand, and change.

There’s also support for different architectural approaches (like clean architecture or DDD), depending on how structured a project needs to be.

Right now, I’m still very early:

  • I’m validating whether this problem resonates beyond my own use cases

  • I’m figuring out how opinionated a generator should be

  • And I’m trying to understand where the line is between “helpful automation” and “over-engineering”

I’m sharing this here mainly to learn:

  • Do you run into this problem in your own projects?

  • Have you used code generators long-term, and what worked or didn’t?

  • What would make you trust generated code enough to use it in a real project?

I’d really appreciate any thoughts, critiques, or experiences you’re willing to share. Even “this is a bad idea and here’s why” is super helpful at this stage.

Thanks for reading!

About

I started Codexable after getting tired of repeatedly writing the same things in Laravel projects. The goal is to help builders ship faster without sacrificing code quality.
