2026 Building ColorAnalysisQuiz: How We Turned a $300 Fashion Trend into a Lightweight AI Micro-SaaS

Hey Indie Hackers! 👋

I'm Sivan, Style Tech Lead at Color Analysis Quiz.

Over the past few months, we've been building and growing a tool that solves a very specific, high-intent problem in the fashion & beauty space: Seasonal Color Analysis.

I wanted to share our story of building it, the tech stack behind it, and what we've learned about SEO and growth in the beauty-tech niche so far.

💡 The Problem: The $300 Barrier to Finding Your Colors

If you've spent any time on TikTok or Instagram recently, you’ve probably seen the trend: people heading to Korea or hiring personal stylists to figure out their "color season" (e.g., Soft Autumn, Cool Winter, Light Spring).

However, there were two major issues with the existing market:

1. In-person consultations are expensive: They typically cost $200 to $500 per session.

2. Existing online quizzes are misleading: Most free online "color quizzes" rely on 3 static multiple-choice questions (e.g., "What color are your eyes?"), yielding generic and often inaccurate results.

We saw a clear gap: Can we use AI vision models and colorimetry rules to bring accurate, professional 12-season color analysis to everyone for free/cheap?

🛠️ What We Built & Our Tech Stack

We built Color Analysis Quiz— a web app that analyzes facial contrast, skin undertones, and hair shade to generate a comprehensive 12-season color report.

Our Tech Stack:

  • Framework: Next.js (App Router) + TypeScript for fast SSR/SSG rendering (crucial for SEO).

  • Styling: Tailored Vanilla CSS / Tailwind with a soft, luxury editorial palette (blush rose #E88D8D, warm cream #FFFBF7).

  • Storage & Infrastructure: Cloudflare R2 for fast, privacy-focused image storage and delivery.

  • AI Engine: Vision LLMs fine-tuned with structured prompts on color theory (chroma, value, undertone analysis, and virtual draping).

📈 Early Traction & Growth Lessons (Building in Public)

Building the product was only 30% of the battle. Here is how we’ve been approaching marketing and traffic:

1. Long-Tail SEO Strategy

Instead of competing head-on for high-difficulty broad terms like "fashion quiz", we created a dedicated programmatic SEO matrix for all 12 seasonal sub-types (e.g., /examples/soft-autumn-analysis, /examples/cool-winter-analysis).

  • Results so far: Google has indexed us for 49+ high-intent keywords (including terms like color analysis cost, my color analysis ai, and what season am i quiz).

2. Pinterest Visual Search Marketing

Fashion and color analysis are inherently visual. We leverage Pinterest to share high-contrast infographics displaying "Best Colors vs. Colors to Avoid" for each season. Since Pinterest functions as a visual search engine, these pins generate long-tail referral traffic directly to our specific season landing pages.

🧠 Key Lessons Learned

1. Don't design a beauty product like a SaaS dashboard: In our initial MVP, we used default techy blue UI components. Engagement was lukewarm. As soon as we pivoted to a high-end, beauty-editorial design aesthetic (serif typography, warm beige tones), user session duration doubled.

2. Intent matters more than traffic volume: Visitors searching for "Soft Autumn lipstick guide" convert 5x better than visitors searching for general fashion advice.

💬 Would Love Your Feedback!

We’re constantly refining the user flow and AI analysis accuracy.

If you have a minute, I’d love for the IH community to test out Color Analysis Quiz and roast our UX, landing page copy, or monetization flow.

  • Have you ever tried personal color analysis?

  1. 1

The shift from broad traffic to high-intent long-tail queries is the more interesting lesson here. Curious whether those 5x-converting searches are also driving the majority of actual revenue, or just better engagement.
