April 7, 2020 Extracting data from official news with NLP

The official data COVID-19 data in Bulgaria is distributed to the public in the form of a news article. Its content is volatile, however the main data points are written in a similar manner.

I was able to create a script to fetch the data in an automated way using sentence segmentation, tokenisation, fuzzy matching and tokens distance.

The end result is that https://coronavirus-bulgaria.org/en/ has more data - infected medical staff, hospitalised and intensive care cases, cases by gender and cases outcome ratio. Apart from that the data on the website is sometimes updated quicker than the Ministry of Health website.

April 3, 2020 Launch on Indie Hackers

Since the website launch a lot of things have improved. Currently the Bulgarian cases data is automatically scraped and updated real-time. A flexible database model was introduced which would allow release of other countries as well.

This week I spend some time implementing i18n so that I can share the website with the Indie Hackers community.

March 12, 2020 Came up with the idea

In Bulgaria the official source of COVID-19 information is presented by the authorities in a raw and verbal way without any visualisations or historical data.

The media constantly reflects the information from the regular briefing and usually summarizes it at the end of the day. So, if you don't follow the news often, you will have access to aggregated rather than complete chronological information.

This website aims to solve this issue and maybe to expand to other countries as well!
