Why I Built an AI Interview Companion After Watching Talented Developers Get Rejected
Over the last few years, I've noticed something surprising.
Some of the best developers I know were struggling in interviews.
Not because they lacked technical skills.
Not because they couldn't build software.
But because interviews are fundamentally different from real-world engineering.
In our day-to-day jobs, we have access to documentation, teammates, code reviews, search engines, and time to think through problems.
Interviews are different.
You're expected to solve unfamiliar problems under pressure while explaining every step of your thinking.
I've seen talented engineers get rejected because they froze during a system design discussion.
I've seen experienced developers struggle to explain a debugging approach despite solving similar problems at work every day.
That observation led me down a rabbit hole.
The Question That Started It All
What if candidates had access to an intelligent companion that could help them navigate technical discussions more effectively?
Not a tool to replace learning.
Not a tool to cheat.
But a tool that helps candidates communicate, structure their thoughts, and perform closer to their actual ability.
That's the idea behind Crackly AI.
What We Built
Crackly AI is designed to support developers through technical interview workflows.
It can assist with:
- Coding discussions
- Debugging challenges
- System design conversations
- Technical interview questions
- Resume and ATS insights
- Voice-based interaction
The goal is simple:
Help candidates focus on solving problems instead of fighting interview anxiety.
Building in Public
We're currently in the early stages and actively looking for feedback from developers, students, and job seekers.
The product is far from perfect.
But every conversation with users helps us improve.
If you're actively interviewing, I'd love to hear:
- What's the hardest part of interviews for you?
- What do existing interview preparation tools get wrong?
- What would make an AI companion genuinely useful?
Building products is easy.
Building something people truly need is much harder.
That's the journey we're on.
Thanks for reading.
