After hacking for a few months and some user testing with friends, I have something I think others can benefit from. This at least solves my problem and I'd use it when starting any new project. It's the most stable and advanced stack I've used. Finally had the time to do it "right". There are many improvements that can be made but this is a good first pass that is a significant improvement over the alternative, random blog posts, and provides several custom libraries to remove integration boilerplate.

Some learnings:

  • Didn't need to support as many as many options (could have gone with a single backend instead)
  • Documentation is harder than code to get right. User testing showed that people read instructions differently. Some people skim read and try to go as fast as possible. Some people read everything and want to know all the context. Some people interpret instructions differently. Was not expecting this.
  • There's a significant teaching aspect of the product. Unless users are familiar with the tools I'm using, it's my job to educate them to make the tool more accessible.

Still struggling with the level of accessibility I want to provide early on but I believe initial feedback is most important.

May 20, 2020 Idea

Every startup I goto or every time I'm working on a new idea I'm constantly re-writing essentially the same glue code between frameworks. I'm always torn between spending time to do it "right" way and focusing on the product I'm building. It would be great if there was a stable solution I could trust instead of following random blog posts that don't present a single cohesive solution.

When I was at Google, we never started from scratch on a project. We had a solid foundation to build on. Most of the time there's only a single or at most two choices for a tool (ex. web frameworks) and everything is integrated together very well in comparison. This provides companies like Google and Facebook a leg up on others.

What if startups and new projects could benefit from this same type of integrated toolchain?

About

As a SWE at Google you never start a project from scratch. Google provides a stable integrated solution. Externally it's fractured and as a developer it's your responsibility to connect the dots.
