April 15, 2023 Starting a platform for showcasing and cross promoting newsletters

I'm building https://crossgrowth.io, a platform for showcasing and cross-promoting newsletters.

I just released the landing page where I'm trying to get newsletter links from people who are interested in showcasing and/or cross promoting newsletters.

I think people building newsletters audiences, can benefit the most from having their newsletter shared in other newsletters while in the same way they can share other newsletters to their audience.

Starting to build it took me much longer then initially expected, because once you start doing it you start focusing on a lot of details, some which are important, some which are not. Since I plan to build it in public, I will share my initial steps.

I already identified the first few issues:

  1. I should stop aiming for the perfect release. I started to build a landing page, then I decided to build it static, and use digitalocean functions, which appeared like a nice idea at the time, but ended spending a few days to get familiar with it(which I though it would take a few hours)

  2. I should use more time to interact with the community, share my ideas and getting feedback. This is why building in public makes a lot of sense, but I think it comes with a cost: time. I know there are people saying building in public meas sharing something, anything, I personally don't feel I should post meaningless information. So I decided to allocate about 30%-40% for not-coding, non-technical, non-building tasks.

  3. I should release small, release fast. Easier to tell than to do, especially in the begining. In practice, things, modules, features are interdependent. I built the landing page but didn't publish it for a while because I wanted to build a first release of the site, I started with the user area, then a CRUD for newsletters, then messages and comments. You probably noticed a few "thens". I realized I should stop adding features. So I'm going to publish a down featured version first, with only a bunch of newsletters, while I polish the user area.

Meanwhile, the landing page out in the wild. It would be nice if you could spare a few moments and review it: https://www.indiehackers.com/post/roast-my-landing-page-crossgrowth-a-platform-to-cross-promoting-your-newsletter-4373b63671

About

I want to build something for indiehackers community, where I enjoy spending time. I found an open and vibrant community, so it makes sense to build such a product, especially that I intend to build it in public.
