CryptMind
Your wellbeing made private.
TL;DR: I built a cross-platform journaling app with a zero-PII architecture while using it to process my own life transformation. Now I’m sharing the journey and looking for feedback.
The Origin Story
A year ago, my life turned upside down. I had to process a collapsed marriage and drowning in self-doubt.
To stay afloat, I started Morning Rituals, daily journal entries to get thoughts out of my head before they pulled me under.
Existing apps failed me:
Uploaded my private thoughts to their cloud
Tracked my mood for “analytics”
Monetised my pain through ads and subscriptions
So I built CryptMind - not to sell, but to survive.
And here’s the twist: I journaled inside CryptMind while building it.
My personal transformation became the test data. My needs became the roadmap.
What Makes It Different
Zero-PII Architecture
No real identities, only opaque device IDs
Local encryption before any storage or sync
Optional CouchDB sync, only when you choose
No analytics, no tracking, no “insights” dashboards
Feature Flags for Gradual Rollout
Every capability hides behind flags so growth feels organic, not forced.
Built While Using It
CryptMind was both my coping tool and my lab notebook. The app that saved me is now maturing into something that can help others.
Tech Stack
Frontend
Angular 20+, Electron, Capacitor, PWA
Web Crypto API for client-side encryption
PouchDB for local-first storage
Backend
FastAPI (Python) + CouchDB (optional sync)
MariaDB for feature flags
Principles
Local-first: works offline by default
Zero-knowledge encryption
Anti-surveillance: no data sales, no tracking, no ads
Current State
Working
✅ Journals (diary, dream, ritual, divination)
✅ Calendar view + pro calendar integrations
✅ Encrypted full-text search
✅ Cross-platform builds
Roadmap
Unified calendar (appointments + journals)
Client-side pattern recognition (themes, streaks)
Circles—encrypted group journals
Federated sync via ActivityPub
💸 Business Model
Journaling on your machine is FREE forever.
Basic Sync: £5/month. Zero-knowledge storage on the server, so you can sync between devices.
Pro: £150/month. Basic Sync + client management, appointment management, and invoice creation from appointments.
Pro+: £299/month. Everything in Pro. Practice management, coworker management, and delegating clients.
No ads. No data sales. No AI training on your journals. Ever.
The Philosophy
The Path of the Necromancer is not to master death—it’s to find the part of the self that was not born and will not decay.
Journaling is alchemy:
Solve – analyse and dissolve what no longer serves
Coagula – re-form into what you choose to be
CryptMind’s architecture mirrors that:
Encryption protects what’s eternal; feature flags represent gradual becoming; local-first design ensures sovereignty over your own story.
Why I’m Sharing This
I built CryptMind to survive a personal collapse.
I used CryptMind to document building CryptMind.
Now I’m releasing it so others can write, heal, and build their own transformations.
It’s not a hockey-stick startup. It’s a survival tool that became a product.
What I Need from Indie Hackers
Feedback: Does zero-PII matter to you, or is it over-engineering?
Reality check: Would you actually pay for privacy?
Feature ideas: What would make it your daily journal?
Ethical marketing: How do you reach people who need privacy without surveillance ads?
Challenges I’m wrestling with:
Marketing without hypocrisy
Pricing fairness vs. sustainability
Distribution to stores that require tracking SDKs
If this resonates, I’d love:
🧪 Beta testers who actually journal
🧰 Architecture feedback
💡 Ideas for privacy-respecting growth

Thanks for reading. I know posting about anti-capitalist, privacy-first software on a YC-backed forum is ironic, but Indie Hackers is full of people who build from necessity, not hype.
🤝 You’re my people.
About
Giant companies are growing by collecting our data without any real security being enforced. CryptMind gives the control back to you by encrypting your data on your device.
