We did something a little non-traditional with our index page. Rather than put up a fancy splash page making vague promises about our product, we just let users use our product right away. We hope this transparency reduces friction. Are we being foolish?
Starting a business gives you a whole new appreciation for what Google did for the world. Not only is this a growth strategy that you can do without a budget, the quality of leads it brings in is outstanding. People who google for something already want that thing. It's beautiful.

Until Google decides to make an algo change and you lose half your revenue. Please folks, don't put all your eggs in one basket. Google is your best friend when times are good but can be a total dick and mess with your livelihood whenever it wants to. I've experienced it first hand several times and it it's not fun. The same with any marketing channel really. Figure out what works well and do that, but don't make the mistake of not diversifying your efforts. Cheers!

I think the solution here is to think about what Google won't change. No matter how many times they've updated their ranking algorithm, they've never selected for sites they can't effectively crawl, or for slow sites or for sites that searchers instantly bounce from.

Yep, exactly. There are some evergreen strategies. But point taken @genemachine, we shouldn't be putting all our eggs in a basket that's not entirely in our control.

Yeah, more of this ^^ SEO is great when you hit those long tail non-competitive keywords, but it's a long haul and at the end of the day it's only one marketing channel. People act like it's free, but it takes a ton of work to rank. Your time is money, it's not free.

Well, you have more chance to be ripped of by PPC than SEO. When Big Brands will shift the majority of their budget in Digital Ads(They still have the majority of their budget ads on TV), many small businesses will crash because of the very high cost of advertising.
One company I worked for doesn't do any PPC or SEO they only do Email Marketing and they are at €4 billion/year, they did SEO in the beginning and switch to Email Marketing only when they saw the growth, people love what they do so it spread like wild-fire.
But if I have to choose, I'll do what Buffer did (I'm trying it), 0.5% of their budget in Ads everything else is Content Marketing, now they have $20 millions/year and can close their office and everything is working for them with marginal cost (highest cost being people). source : https://open.buffer.com/transparent-budget/

Could you explain a solution for those of us, me, who have no idea what you mean?

He meant Google may change its search algorithm any moment and your content will not be indexed and searchable as well as before anymore.
But honestly, I don't think it can be changed so drastically - anyway, Google is the search system so its goal is to help people to find content.
The point is you should not rely only on SEO. You should use different channels so even if Google change something or even ban your content for some reason your other channels will still work and bring you leads.-

All I'm saying is don't put your business in the hands of a search engine. All it takes is an algo change to kill off your organic traffic (some, a lot, or most of it). The same goes for ads, affiliate marketing, any single source of visitors that generates most revenue for you. You just never know when things can turn for the worse. Advertiser increasing your costs and making your inbound model unsustainable... one shady affiliate marketer ruining your affiliate strategy, google blocking your ads etc. I'm not saying you shouldn't focus on what works, but try to ground yourself in the fact that your source of revenue could drop off from under you any time. Depending on what you sell, you should probably spread your efforts down the line into various channels (SEO, ad spend, video, podcast, referral, email, traditional advertising etc). If you want to know more, google for algorithm changes and how they have effected people in various industries in the past.

As a marketer over 6 years, I learned that you should not totally depend on Google. I have few blogs and getting large number of traffic from Bing, which I never expected. But over the time I optimised more for other search engines as well. The strategy I always suggest my clients as well. This market is crowded and very competitive, so it’s better to use even a single chance you get.
So there are ton of opportunities people not seeing, and be open minded. Good luck

Google is the internet God... Can make you the most powerful business in the world or destroy you in just a couple of minutes...
Rather than refreshing my crypto portfolio every 10 minutes, I thought it would be better for the news to come to me. I was told to make a product that I myself would use. So it begins.

It does, but it's quite verbose IMHO. Just a lot to take in.
I'd get a one-liner at the top to make it instantly understood. Something like "Never miss a cryptocurrency spike" or something like that. Give people a reason why, not the what about your business.
Thanks for the feedback!
