I decided to rebuild CurlsBot as a Next.js site built with Tailwind/Daisy UI and an API created with TypeScript and Vite. The new site has a bunch of new features like a frizz forecast and a comprehensive database of ingredients. You can check it out on Product Hunt.
Through Amazon Affiliate links placed within the results and on the educational pages, I reached $5000 a year profit in 2019. Since then because Amazon changes the affiliate rates, there have been ups and downs, but I generally get around $3000-$6000 a year.
I rewrote the chatbot as a website, built in React + Gatsby JS. This allowed me to build a more advanced UI and also add some pages with educational info. It's hosted on Github Pages so I never have any expenses and GatsbyJS means it's super fast. It also was built to qualify as a PWA (Progressive Web App) so it has some app features like add to homescreen.
I first wrote Curlsbot as a Facebook chatbot, mostly because chatbots were trendy at the time. Users would message the bot with an ingredients list and get back the results in the form of text. I moved Curlsbot to a website because I didn't want it limited to just Facebook and as the results got more complicated, it was difficult to just send them as a message.
