The prettiest chrome extension manager on the store

August 22, 2019 Hit 12,000 users!

At this stage, this little extension has been going for a few years.

We've been making some incremental tweaks, improving reliability and speed, as well as adding some new features to scratch our own itches, such as:

Tabbing!
The tabbing flow now makes sense in the extension. When you open it, the search input is focused. When you search for something and find it, pressing tab focuses the switch, and lets you toggle the extension on or off with a push of the spacebar!

Well done! What learnings do you have over the past few years as you've grown the extension?

    1. 1

Not an awful lot really to be honest. Solve your own problems I guess? This extension is something we wanted for ourselves as we thought it was very clunky to enable and disable chrome extensions.

Turns out other people find it helpful too :)

Hi @ChipD. Congrats! 12,000 seems amazing. Would you mind sharing some tips and tricks?

A few days ago, I released my first extension - Alternative To by SaaSHub, and I've been thinking how to grow it. So far, all that I have done is placing a link on a central position on the homepage. (apart from PH submission).

Did you grow the user-base organically or were you featured on the chrome store at some point?

It was all organic. We made sure that it would rank for the relevant search terms that we were aiming for (we still might change the name a little to make it even better, and also portable to Firefox).

Other than that we just posted on relevant subreddits and product hunt, but honestly it was all just organic growth really. We dip in and out of the extension every couple of months but since it's not a money maker it's just something we let ourselves indulge in occasionnally.

How many views does the Chrome store get usually? Do they arrive their from a normal search or a search within the Chrome store?

        Thanks!

I don't think we get that level of analytics from the chrome web store, so I'm not sure where they come from really... :/

    Love it :)

Is there any way you get insight into who the users are? And does something like this have the potential to make money?

    1. 1

we have Google Analytics but that's about it. we don't know much more than that, and keeping an eye on the reviews and feedback in the chrome web store.

We have a few ideas as to how it could MAYBE make money - but we're not sure. it'll require some testing. Next step in my opinion is embedding a survey in the extension and ask users to fill it out, to determine how it's being used now and if there's any common patterns of people using it for enterprise.

Good !! What strategy have you used to gain these users ?

    1. 1

Not much. Just sharing it the odd time on reddit etc.

I mean, that's 4 years of that though...

A long run but a good result. It's been almost 2 years since I've published Resting (https://www.indiehackers.com/product/resting) on the firefox store with a tiny promotion and for now I have reached a little more than 1000 users. we just kinda built it for ourselves and then it grew organically really, so just give it time!

Congrats! Besides being on the chrome store, what is your current acquisition strategy?

    1. 2

Nothing apart from some posts on blogs and reddit etc. It's been mainly organic. And slow. We initially put it live 4 years ago!

That's good to know @ChipD. How are you handling the marketing aspect of this product? Is there a way to market it inside the Chrome Web Store?

About

Chrome extensions are amazing - but they can be difficult to manage and turn on/off easily. Custom chrome gives you quick and easy access to all of your extensions, with unique group functionality too
