February 9, 2026 Why I’m making a $480/year feature free (Day 2)

Yesterday I posted about launching DayTradingCentral, my alternative to tools like TradeZella.

One question I got was: "How do you make money if it's free?"

The Strategy: Competitors charge $30-$50/month mostly for "Analytics" and "Trade Replay" (viewing your trade execution on a chart).

I decided to make those features 100% free.

As a bootstrapper, I can't out-spend the incumbents on ads. But I can out-give them on value. My bet is that by commoditizing the "basic" features (journaling & analytics), I can build a massive user base.

I plan to monetize later on "Advanced" features:

  • Automated Backtesting (server-heavy)

  • Advanced Trading platform

  • Copy-Trading functionality

Question for the community: Has anyone here successfully pivoted from "Free Tool" to "Paid Ecosystem"? Or is the "Free Forever" tier a trap that kills server costs (I'm hosting on Hetzner to keep bills low)?

February 8, 2026 🚀 Launched the MVP: A free trading journal to kill Excel (and $40/mo subscriptions)

Hey IndieHackers! 👋

I’ve been day trading for a few years, and I got frustrated with the tooling landscape.

The industry standard journaling platforms (TradeZella, TraderSync, etc.) are fantastic, but they charge $30-$50 per month. For a beginner trader who is likely still losing money, adding a high fixed cost felt like a punishment.

So, I decided to code my own solution.

The Goal: Build a platform that offers the same "Premium" analytics and journaling features, but make it free to lower the barrier to entry.

The Stack:

  • Frontend: Next.js (React)

  • Backend: NestJS

  • Database: PostgreSQL

Where I need help: I just launched the public beta. I’m looking for feedback on the Dashboard UX. Does the data visualization feel intuitive compared to the paid giants?

You can roast my setup here: https://www.daytradingcentral.com/

I’m happy to answer any questions about the NestJS architecture or how I handled the trade import parsing!

    Hey MuzZ,

The idea of automating trendline and pattern-based trade execution hits a clear pain point for active traders who hate watching charts all day.

Right now the hero and value hierarchy focus on what the tool does rather than what measurable result it delivers (like saving hours per week or improving trade execution timing), and that often limits early conversion, especially in the finance niche where trust and metrics matter.

Most founders try to refine the copy themselves, but the real lift usually comes from structuring the hero & bullets around outcomes first, then how it works second.

I can walk you through a focused messaging and conversion audit and propose the first 3–5 changes that will help boost sign-ups and engagement, this is a paid review with clear deliverables.

Congratulations on your launch. It looks impressive! What channels are you exploring to attract early users?

About

Tired of paying $40/mo for journals like TradeZella just to track stats, I built DayTradingCentral. It’s the free 'Command Center' I wish I had as a beginner—consolidating analytics, risk tools, and journaling in one tab
