Dendron
A note-taking tool that grows as you do
Dendron came out of preview today. This was 5 months, 14 minor versions, many hundreds of commits, and over a hundred user conversations in the making.
Coming out of preview means the following:
- Dendron is announcing our Environmentalist plan, a 100% optional monthly subscription for users who like to support us financially
- Dendron will now commit to a regular release cycle
- Dendron will have a deprecation policy for all non-experimental (🚧) features
- Dendron is dropping the preview label
Launched Dendron's Environmentalist Plan. This is a 100% optional monthly contribution that users can make to keep Dendron sustainable.
Environmentalist get a special discord role, early access to new features, special channels, and other goodies. Comes in three tiers.

Hacker news post: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=24898373
Posted a link about Dendron which went viral on hacker news. Note taking is a hot topic on HN these days. This was also subsequently picked up in other channels like pinboard.

Had over 500 people download Dendron inside the VSCode marketplace: https://marketplace.visualstudio.com/items?itemName=dendron.dendron
Average rating of 5 stars.
Currently Dendron is still in preview but have been adding lots of features and we just announced our first minor version bump

A complete stranger tweeted (positively) about Dendron. What was especially rewarding is that they liked aspects of Dendron that I worked really hard to get right - the focus on hierarchies and striking a balance between free form links and solid organization schemes.

Made a post about Dendron on HN. Funny thing is - I made the same post a week prior when I launched but had no traction. Posting it again a week later made all the difference. That and adding roam in the title!

After a year of iterating and two false starts, finally launched Dendron!
The goal from day one was always to create a better knowledge management tool for people to create, organize and share information.
Version 1 was a standalone note taking app for enterprise but realized I was spending too much time implementing non-differentiating note taking functionality.
Version 2 was an already bootstrapped knowledge base of AWS information. I wanted to leverage my experience with AWS and give people a compelling example of what could be build. I had some traction here but didn't have a product that people could create their own notes in.
Version 3 is what I launched - an open source, local-first, markdown-based, hierarchal note taking tool build on top of VSCode.

Note taking has been an obsession passion of mine for as long as I can remember. After having amassed a corpus of +20k markdown notes, I created Dendron because I couldn't find any other tool that could let me manage it
