August 12, 2026 Launched DepthScout: free fishing depth maps for 35,000+ waters

Most fishing maps show you the shoreline. The harder question is what to do once you are on the water.

I built DepthScout to close that gap. Pick a lake or river, choose the species you are targeting, and it ranks underwater structure for the current season. Every suggested spot explains why it is worth fishing, when the likely bite windows are, and what lure or bait to try.

The current dataset covers more than 35,000 lakes and rivers, including over 14,000 waters with real survey bathymetry. Every chart is labeled so anglers can distinguish measured contours from approximations. Maps can also be saved before launching and used without a signal.

The product is free to browse and currently earns $0. The biggest challenges were combining inconsistent public fisheries datasets, making the map usable on a phone in a boat, and explaining recommendations without pretending they guarantee a catch.

I would especially value feedback on two things: whether the spot explanations are useful at a glance, and which region or species should get deeper coverage next.
