Design Disciplin
Institution for design knowledge
Hello hackers,
I've been silently learning from IH for a long time, and excited to start contributing.
I'd like to introduce to you my project Design Disciplin, which I started in 2021.
When I started Design Disciplin, I was making my living as a scholar and teacher of design in academia.
It all began when Covid struck and we made the move to remote teaching. The standard practice among my colleagues was to continue traditional lecturing, only on Zoom instead of in the classroom. But I found myself deeply dissatisfied with the "user experience" that I could to offer my students via Zoom lectures. At the same time, I recognized that I was learning most of my own hard skills as a designer and technologist on YouTube. And I saw great opportunity in the "creator economy". I tried to combine the new tools and business models of the creator economy with the advanced and specialized topics we handled at the university, and Design Disciplin was born.
Design Disciplin is currently an almost-weekly publication that maintains a YouTube channel, a podcast, and a website. We publish content that includes "concepts" to explain ideas that help designers, "conversations" with creatives, scholars, and leaders, and "masterclasses" where we review designs in the real world. On our website, we also offer productized services for our audience of younger designers, including portfolio reviews, career consulting, and curated resources.
Our sources of income are subscriptions and services, although in time I'm interested in exploring partnerships and sponsorships as well.
Even though my own discipline as a designer is web, UI, UX, and interaction design, I have great love for all branches of design including industrial design, fashion, graphics, architecture, and interiors. I'm not alone. Many designers are introduced to their profession through one discipline of design, and find themselves practicing another. And this is precisely the reason why Design Disciplin exists. Over time I hope to build a multi-disciplinary resource that helps young designers see the "full picture" of the landscape of creative professions, and make their career choices wisely.
If you are a designer or design lover, I would love to hear your comments on Design Disciplin. Does it feel relevant or interesting to you, or does it make you feel even more confused than before? Does it help you professionally, or is it merely a curiosity? Does it offer anything that relates to your specific goals and problems, or do you have things that keep you up at night, which we haven't covered yet?
I look forward to developing Design Disciplin into a valuable resource and sound business together with the IH community.
Peace,

I personally have little available bandwidth to read more design content. It is a heavily saturated market space. I typically navigate to before/after examples. One of my favourites is the ReLondon branding/website by brandethos.co.uk https://brandethos.co.uk/work/relondon/
For example: on chatgpt plus subscription, GPT4 is now available and when you tag thumbs down, it will over you 'new conversation'. And as citizen you say better, or no difference. This interaction is a hook style interaction as having the citizen experience something. If you demonstrate that with your style of content, it will be a different experience, than 'yet more theory, more words'.
if the experience is expanding to the citizen, (e.g. within they gleam an insight, or as simple as enjoy it, or think that is savvy, smart) -- all expanding experiences versus contracting experiences -- the citizen will then be keen for next action.
Content only is insufficient - as market heavily saturated and any citizen can get smarter content from chatgpt plus. (without marketing fluff). Time is now
Great insights, thank you!
