Dev Gifts

I spent my Sunday looking up gift ideas that I felt excited about as a developer. I prepared a workspace in Notion where I keep track of the product name, the creator's name and social links (so i can reach later for promotion), and a short product description. I gathered a bunch of marketing ideas, like slogans and copy, and which channels I could post on. I made some soft Reddit posts, asking developers what good and bad gift experiences they've had. Then I spent my Monday evening building V1 of the website. I found a Gatsby starter that fit nicely with what I had in mind. I put the data in Airtable so I can use that as a no-code database. And I setup Firebase Hosting. Today, Tuesday evening, I made some tweaks to the layout, added more content, and created a Twitter account (twitter.com/DevGifts). At this point I'm ready to share this with the world. MVP build in 2 days! ✅

In the beginning of 2020 I gave my self the goal of having one of my project "succeed" by the end of the year. By that I meant, have a project that gets traffic, at least a few thousand visits. Having failed with various projects this year, I was a little down. But then the company I work for started talking about Secret Santa. I though: "what kind of crappy gift and I gonna get this year"... So I though, why not just tell my teammates what gifts I would love to have as a developer. And why don't I get all my developer friends to make their suggestions too. That's how I got the idea for devgifts.co: A curated list of great gifts that will boost your tech team.
