May 12, 2020 400 Signups and #3 on HackerNews

We have been working on DevQuartertly.com (the first dev agency market research) as a side-project for almost a year now. Back in February we started talking with customers (a.k.a. emailing dev shops) and today we reached the 400th signed up company.

On top of that we have submitted the first DevQuarterly report to HackerNews last Friday at 5 PM (CET) and in 15 minutes our Analytics exploded. I've been taking screenshots of my GA's Realtime view with the highest number being 316 active users on site—a number we have never seen for a day, not realtime. :)

HackerNews helped us tremendously in pumping up relevant visitor numbers (top countries: US, UK, Canada, Germany and the Netherlands) and gave a huge bump for our newsletter, doubling our number of subscribers to 600. In actually building up our initial user base what helped us has been talking with our target audience.

How did we make it to the homepage?
Honestly, I'm not sure.

  • Pretty sure the timing did help Friday night in Europe, Friday early work hours in PDT (who else would want to launch with this timing?!) :D
  • My full-time job is at a YC company and once I submitted something from our company blog that also made it to the homepage of HN... and two dozen other posts that got 5 upvotes and disappeared forever so probably this didn't help much either.
  • The title did tell the whole story, this is what I used: Analysis of dev agencies with hourly rates, team size and tech stack

I will keep you posted about the next milestones and please let me know if you have any questions.

Thanks,
Tamas
