May 16, 2026 What I’m learning while building a B2B data product

One thing I’m realizing while working on a B2B lead generation product: people don’t really want “more leads.”

They want fewer bad leads.

A huge contact database sounds impressive, but in practice, most teams care about a much smaller set of things:

- Can I find the right type of company?

- Can I filter by role, location, industry, seniority, or company size?

- Can I preview the size of the audience before spending money?

- Can I export the data in a format my workflow actually accepts?

- Can I enrich an existing list instead of starting from scratch?

- Can I automate part of this through an API?

The more I look at the space, the more I think the real problem in B2B lead generation is not access to data. It’s usability, pricing clarity, and confidence.

A founder or small sales team does not want to spend days setting up a complex sales intelligence platform. They usually want to answer a simple question:

“Can I quickly build a useful prospect list for this specific market?”

That’s why I think smaller, more focused tools still have room to compete with larger platforms.

Not by having the biggest database.

Not by adding every possible sales feature.

But by making the workflow faster, clearer, and easier to understand.

A few things I’m thinking about:

1. Preview before export matters

Users should know how many matching leads exist before they spend credits or commit to a search.

2. Transparent pricing matters

A lead, lookup, export, or API request should not feel like a mystery.

3. Export flexibility matters

CSV is still important, but JSON and API access are becoming more useful for technical teams and automation workflows.

4. Data quality matters more than volume

A smaller set of more relevant contacts is often more useful than a massive export full of outdated or irrelevant records.

5. Small teams need speed

They do not want enterprise onboarding just to test one market, one niche, or one outbound campaign.

I’m curious how other founders think about this.

When you use B2B lead generation, sales intelligence, or data enrichment tools, what matters most to you?

Data quality, pricing, filters, export options, API access, or something else?

hundevmode — "people don't want more leads, they want fewer bad leads" is one of the sharper product insights I've seen on IH. That reframe changes everything about how you build filters and pricing.

To answer your question: data quality and audience preview before paying are the two that matter most. Nobody wants to export 500 contacts and find 60% are outdated.

At $10K/mo you've clearly got product-market fit. The question is whether your funnel converts at the rate the product deserves — that gap is usually where the next $10K is hiding.

I run conversion audits for founders. Happy to take a look.
