Professional Invoicing Made Simple
TL;DR: I'm a solo founder from Austria. I built DoneAndBilled — a web app that lets freelancers log their work, generate professional PDFs, and send invoices. Hosted in the EU, GDPR-compliant by design, and built for people who run more than one business.
The Problem I Was Solving (For Myself)
I run two small businesses — a web development studio and a stamp dealership. Every month, invoicing meant:
Opening a spreadsheet to calculate hours
Copy-pasting into a Word template
Manually formatting a PDF
Emailing it with my bank details buried in the footer
Repeating for the second business with different letterhead
I looked at existing tools. Most were either too complex (full accounting suites I'd use 10% of), too US-centric (built around US tax law and USD), or stored everything on American servers — which matters when you're operating under GDPR.
So I built my own.
What I Built
DoneAndBilled is a web-based invoicing app specifically for freelancers, solopreneurs, consultants, and small agencies.
Key features:
Multi-company management — run multiple businesses from one account, each with its own invoice numbering, logo, bank details, and VAT settings
Multiple billing locations per company — useful for agencies with offices or different legal entities
Professional PDF invoicing — DIN-5008 compliant, window-envelope ready, auto-numbered
EU VAT logic — Austrian/EU VAT, Reverse Charge for B2B cross-border, Kleinunternehmer exemption
Activity logging → invoice — log your work, then turn logged hours directly into invoice line items
Credit notes — proper accounting corrections, not just "delete the invoice and pretend"
Recurring invoices — for retainer clients
Stripe payment links — clients can pay directly from the invoice email
GDPR-compliant — hosted in the EU, privacy-first
Plans:
Free — 1 company, basic invoicing
Pro — 2 companies + locations, €9/month
Business — Unlimited everything, €29/month
How I Built It
I'm not a traditional developer — I'm more of a product person. I handled all the architecture decisions, product design, and quality review myself over roughly 3 months of evenings and weekends.
What I Learned
1. Ship before it's perfect. I almost spent another month on "one more feature" before launching. The product was already better than my old spreadsheet workflow on day one.
2. GDPR messaging needs to be positive, not fearful. My first marketing copy leaned heavily on "your data never goes to the US." I rewrote it to emphasize what's actually true: EU-hosted, EU-operated, built for EU compliance.
3. .com matters. For an invoicing product that sends emails on your behalf, your domain is your credibility.
Where It Stands Now
Live at doneandbilled.com
Fully localized in English and German
Currently at €0 MRR (just launched, users using the free account at the moment)
What's Next
Getting first paying customers (this post is part of that effort)
Writing content targeting freelancer invoicing queries
Potentially an accountant/bookkeeper referral channel
If you're a European freelancer tired of tools that weren't built with your legal context in mind — I'd genuinely love your feedback.
About
I built DoneAndBilled because I was tired of switching between time tracking tools and invoicing software as a freelancer. I wanted a single, privacy-first EU-hosted app that handles the full workflow — from logging work
