Experiments in building a sustainable internet business.
About 175,000 people take the Life in the UK test every year to qualify for residence. Ainy was one of them last year. She tried several apps on the App Store to help her prepare for the test but didn't like any of them so we decided to build an app she would love.
During research, we found that 5 out of the top 20 best-selling apps on the App Store were for test-preparation so we took a step back & built an engine that transforms a spreadsheet of multiple-choice questions into a beautiful, singing-and-dancing test-preparation app for the iPhone.
We just finished putting content in a spreadsheet that gets churned into a beautiful iPhone App by our no-code platform.
It contains ~1k MCQ-style questions. We are hoping that this would be the best App in the AppStore to prep for Life in the UK test.
We are moving into a market where people are already spending money. This has allowed us the confidence to build our no-code platform - as a side-project - instead of validating the business proposition by building an MVP.
I have been a professional engineer for 15 odd years but I had never built a mobile app let alone a platform that generates mobile apps.
It has taken me 5 months to hammer something that takes a spreadsheet and produces an app that works on iOS.
We are dog-fooding this to build an app for Life-in-the-UK test - An online MCQ test that is required for residence in the UK.
We intend to publish our app in the AppStore within the next month.

Between me and my co-founder (& life partner), we have worked ~20y at startups in the UK and elsewhere. Dripl came about from our frustration at startups with cool products and not customers.
