Results of first Google ad

Google reviewed and approved my add much more quickly than I thought and started serving the single ad I created at around 4.30/5.00pm today.

It's midnight here now and so far the ad has generated:

  • 2446 impressions in Google search
  • 167 clicks for a CTR of 6.83%
  • of these 167 clicks, 22 converted, meaning that those people joined the waitlist.

Considering that

  • it was the first ad and I don't have experience with ads
  • I only got some help from ChatGPT to generate the copy
  • I did some basic keyword research, after than I applied some recommendations from Google
  • the ad, in many versions of the copy, mentions "join the waitlist", so most of the people who clicked on the ad actually knew they would only be joining a waitlist

I think it's not bad! The ad so far cost around 18 euros. Now if instead of joining a waitlist people could actually sign up and try the product right away, I assume more people would have clicked on the ad, and more people would have signed up.

But even if it was just 22 signups, it's not bad for 8 hours I think. Depending on the pricing I will do, if even one only out of those 22 people converted to paid - 4.54% - this first run of the ad would have been repaid in 1-2 months. It it good? is it bad? I don't know, it depends on the customer lifetime value some other stuff I am not sure yet. I need to learn this stuff.

Overall I think that if 167 people clicked the ad in 7-8 hours even if it clearly mentions "waitlist", and 22 people joined the waitlist, surely it must mean that there is interest?

I have these credits from Google so I will keep the ad running until they finish. Let's see where this goes.

    Thanks for sharing!

The results sound pretty good to me, most of the time using ads I barely get any conversions as most traffic is "fake". Did you target a specific region (e.g. USA) ?

I only excluded almost all of Asia because of fear of the click farms, which are a big problem in that continent

Now you can talk to those who left their emails and ask them what made them choose you over your competitors, whether they are willing to pay and for which features, etc.

Good idea! I was wondering what to write in the first email I send them.

For high-intent keywords, a 13% conversion rate isn't bad, but then, if the conversion is just leaving your email, it could/should be a bit higher, IMHO.

If you want, I can do a quick call, take a look at the setup, and tell you what is okay and what needs to be changed.
If you are not experienced with a particular ad platform, you can easily overlook or not know some "simple" things or settings (unfortunately, I have seen it so many times), that experienced marketing specs know how to do for each of the occasions/business situations.

Are you offering consulting services? I would probably use a second pair of eyes when/if I start running Google Ads.

No services, just helping out, I hate how the "small guy" is fucked over.
You are running the ads now, right(?), so I can do it now, to already improve the results :)

          No, I don't. I don't have a landing page yet.

Solid results. Are you still trying to validate your target audience? (Saw a previous post I believe).

Today, right now, the CTR on Google is 9.57%. It seems too high considering that the ad mentions that it's a waitlist. I wonder if this is due to click fraud because most visits are from India, Pakistan and nearby countries. I have heard about click farms in those countries so I have excluded them from the targeting for now.

What's the point of such clicking -- just waste someone's money? Or do you think Google has hired them?

        1. 1

I guess some companies pay these click farms to damage their competitors by consuming their ad budget quickly with invalid clicks. This is why I have never been a big fan of PPC.
