What I learned from this failure, is that it is not always execution. I learned that providing simple sites to local professions is actually a race to the bottom. I found Remax realtors in the area were all paying $300+ / month to have really basic crappy looking websites, but their provider had a deal and their marketing came from someone they trust. I was offering better looking sites are cheaper monthly fees. So why didn't they sign up or care when I made sales calls?

Because its a race to the bottom.

Apparently people like this, who are easy customer targets with their contact online and who definitely pay for monthly site hosting, get dozens of calls a week with people trying to sell them this service. So much so that they don't take any of them seriously, and don't want to have to think about it. When you're overwhelmed by similar products, all trying to be cheaper than the last, people just go with someone they trust that provides the service with as little forethought as possible. And for all the other competitors, to compete with that convenience they end up slashing prices to a point where I am competing with firms in India selling similar services (although not as user-convert minded as my designs) to the same people for $3 / month. That's a race to the bottom, and as an indie hacker that is not where I should be competing.
